One thing I realised after Kevin Smith talked about this movie in an interview last year is that the word "bisexual" is never used in the film. Kevin said he had no idea what that word was or meant at the time of writing because he was so sheltered, but Alyssa gives the perfect explanation for being bi when she tells Holden how open to love she is. I agree, definitely ahead of its time and a very realistic and layered film with kind of a bittersweet ending. He doesn't get to stay with the girl he loves, but we see at the end that he finally learns that he was at fault and he had to work on his insecurities. So that's a positive but at the same time it's definitely different from your average rom-com ending which we've all seen before.
