I haven’t seen the movie before but I remember the controversy at the time was over the violence and Mel got busted saying bad things about the Jews during his DUI arrest. Everything else was just cartman

I have seen the movie, my mom was very religious and made me watch it. The way that depicts the crucifixion of Jesus is very brutally authentic, they show the whipping and the hammering of the nails in, in full detail. From a Christian perspective it's supposed to show the amount that Jesus suffered in full detail and that's supposed to make you feel how much he loves you that he died for you in that way, but because of the amount of focus on his suffering that's why they're calling it a snuff film and joking that Mel Gibson gets off on torture.
