Hello, wizards and witches!

Another ten days of development are behind us, which means it’s time to take another peek behind the scenes of Innocent Witches and see what the team has been working on during this time.

But first - an art preview (available in the next post).

To show you this preview, we had to apply a bit of censorship, since the scene you’re looking at turned out to be quite risqué. As you can see, Marcus has managed to melt the mermaid’s cold heart and grow much closer to her than before. Our artist paid a lot of attention to detail so that in Patch 0.13A, you can fully enjoy this beautiful coastal scene. This scene will accompany a full screen scene with the prefects that will be added in the same 0.13A patch, so double the fun!

Work on Patch 0.12.2B is still underway, and this patch has once again kept us busy a little longer than we would have liked. Work on the Daphne branch took longer than we expected: we had to fix a few art pieces, and several of them were missing. We also discovered issues with the code logic while testing the event. Fortunately, all that is behind us now, and the Daphne storyline is fully ready to play through, from start to finish. The major part that’s left now is to add the repeatable scene.

The goal here is to make the events in 0.12.2B not just one-time scenes that you’ll see once and never return to. You’ll be able to replay them over and over, adjusting the outfits and other small details, and certain elements of the action. This is a good addition to the patch, but technically, it’s more complex than a regular scene. Each element that can be changed based on the choice (piece of clothing, doing certain actions at certain times, and so on) needs to be added to the logic and tested in the game. Then we need to make sure all the variations work correctly together.

Once we’re done with this part, we’ll need to put the emotions in, check the accuracy of the English texts and their link to the translations, and test other small details. Then, in the coming days, we’ll put together a test client and send it to our testers, as well as to Cannoneer level patrons and higher - just as we’ve done before.

So, we can say that we’ve practically left the two prefect routes behind us. Next up is Hermione and the continuation of her story with the Book of Runes. The event itself has already been fully added to the game, and now it’s time for it to go through the same final polishing process: emotions, fixing errors, adjusting the flow of the scenes, and, of course, adding and testing the repeatable part.

By the way, while we’re sorting out all these details during the polishing process, we’ve decided to dedicate enough time to create a sort of a checklist and a step by step guide, so that the other programmers know how the events should look and feel. We plan to do that after the release of 0.12.2B, with the goal to help ensure the programmers that help with the insertion don’t overlook those small but important details that ultimately determine the quality of the gameplay experience.

Right now, the process looks something like this: one programmer sets up the basic framework - backgrounds, events, mechanics, and dialogue - and then another goes through that version and spends time on polishing it, fixing bugs and adding the details that were left out: sounds, pauses, facial expressions, hand movements, and a host of other small details that may seem insignificant on their own, but are precisely what bring everything to life.

We hope that the new checklist / guide approach will allow us to incorporate more of these details right from the first stage and noticeably reduce the time needed for subsequent polishing. We’ll test it on versions 0.13A and 0.13B and see how well this idea works in practice.

Meanwhile, the parallel 0.13A content insertion is underway. Next week, we plan to host an internal test stream and want to bring together as many of our team members as possible - from artists to programmers. This will allow us to gather as many opinions and perspectives as possible, identify issues early on, and immediately collect feedback from people who have worked on different parts of the patch.

At the same time, we’ll see how well the graphics mesh with the dialogues and scenes, and if necessary, make changes before the entire patch goes into final polishing.

Our artists are currently in a rather interesting situation. The art for 0.13A is almost completely finished; only a few small elements remain. Patch 0.13B is also almost fully drawn, though there are a few minor pieces left to do. Patch 0.14A, however, is still in the scriptwriting phase and does not yet have a clearly defined art brief for all events.

Therefore, in the near future, the artists will be able to work simultaneously on several fronts. On the one hand, they can create additional locations and full-screen scenes for 0.14A: for this kind of work, it’s not necessary to wait for a fully completed script. On the other hand, they’ll be able to help with any potential problems that come up during testing and polishing. They can also work on additional art pieces that they feel will fit the game well and expand existing content.

Meanwhile, the scriptwriters are continuing to work on 0.14A. This patch is set to include seven events of varying sizes, including several unique events featuring waifus. The first two are currently in development, with special attention being paid to an event that will actively feature three new characters at once: Pansy, Cho, and Padma.

As they are completed, the events will be handed off to the rest of the team, and the artists will be able to start creating artwork for them almost immediately.

Our parallel development system is working very well and is starting to bear fruit. While one part of the team is finishing one patch, another is already working on the next, and a third can gradually prepare materials for yet another version. We’re gradually fine-tuning our internal processes, working more intensively on several fronts at once, and it seems we’re finally starting to find a good rhythm both in creating new content and in preparing it for release.

And, of course, we’re still keeping an eye on your messages on Discord. Lately, you’ve sent us a few reports about minor bugs and typos, and we’ve already fixed a whole bunch of those issues. Thanks to everyone who reports these kinds of things! It’s your posts that help us spot what the team might have missed during our own checks.

That’s all for today, folks! Thank you for continuing to follow our development, share your thoughts, and help us make the game better. Don’t forget that we have a feedback form where you can ask questions about the code, art, lore, storyline, the team’s plans, and any other aspects of development. We read your questions and answer them gradually in news posts and separate articles.

You can ask our team a question via this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdse939XaXArOlqhXwPYvlbKuWv1XrOh0lJQ6i9tfk-G3SpYw/viewform? fbzx=7624789915021413900

We’ll see you again very soon!

Peace to everyone in the universe ✌️

And now - it’s time for a poll!

How do you feel about the fact that some of our story events often take place in the same locations?

Certain patterns often appear in our scripts: serious conversations take place in the office, while heart-to-heart talks with characters happen on the cliff. We go for walks by the lake, and we have dates at a table by the fireplace. Different places have different atmospheres, and that helps set the right mood, but maybe we should think about adding something less expected?

Options:

I like the established patterns. I know what to expect from each location, and those places are perfect for the related scenes.

I’m all for small experiments now and then. Sometimes a serious conversation in the library or a date in the hallway - why not?

I want more surprises. Let scenes take place in unusual places more often, even if it breaks familiar patterns.

I’m tired of the same patterns. It makes the events too predictable and boring when they happen in the same locations.

I don’t care where the scenes take place. For me, the conversation, the events, and the characters are more important.

I want to see the results of the poll.

On the poll question: Variety is good, but honestly, with how long updates take on this game, I'd rather you keep things simple so it doesn't add too much to the wait for each update. Not trying to stifle your creativity, and I want to be clear that the game is high quality and fun, would just not want to wait as long
