Considering painted style again (Patreon)
Content
In recent times I played a bit of other indie games. In particular, Eliza by Zachtronics. Which is a visual novel, but using painted art style. If you don't know the game here's a screenshot:
what is interesting is beside the art style, there are some adventure like screens in which you click items in the environment. It's really simple but add some more immersion. It's also fully voiced, but there are basically ZERO animations. Not even facial expressions change :P
The game was very popular, way more than any of my games, so definitely there's an audience for this kind of stuff. It's crazy to think about it but there aren't just sexy manga visual novels out there ;) There's also to consider that the publisher was famous for other kind of games they did earlier so that could also have had some impact.
Anyways it's something I'd like to try doing, an "experiment". This time though I'd make sure to use very good painted art. PSCD art wasn't bad but I mean really using a top artist. For example, something like this:
You could never guess but she's the same artist who did Volleyball Heaven character art :) Anyway as you can imagine such painted style would be crazily expensive (the image above would cost like 3 normal CGs lol), way more than simple cell-shading, so it's not an easy decision and probably crowdfunding will be needed again, even before thinking of starting work on such a game.
I guess we'll see, it's just an idea for now. I really think would work well for example for a modern-setting zombie game or something more serious/mature than my usual games. Any feedback is welcome of course!
