Davos stands on the eastern ramparts, watching gulls pick at corpse-meat washed up on the black rocks below

The smell rises with the tide; iron and rot, familiar as his own name

His maimed hand aches where the morning cold settles into old bone

Three days since the kraken died. Three days since I watched my king cut through scale and tentacle like they were made of parchment.

The courtyard below fills with guards herding prisoners

Ironborn in salt-stained rags, some limping, most silent

A few women among them too

Boys too young for beards but old enough to hold axes

Surrender's supposed to mean something. Used to mean something.

Ser Rolland Storm approaches, boots scraping on stone

"His Grace calls for you, Ser Davos. The courtyard."

Voice flat

Davos nods, doesn't trust his voice yet

The boy's got his father's jaw. Shame he's got to watch this.

Davos descends stone steps worn smooth by centuries of Targaryens

Each step echoes off black walls, sound swallowed by morning mist

The courtyard holds maybe sixty prisoners, kneeling in rows

Guards stand behind them, steel drawn, faces stone

Stannis waits at the center, golden sword naked in his grip

The blade hums with light that doesn't warm, doesn't flicker

His Grace stands straight-backed, jaw set like an anchor chain

He looks rested. Like he slept sound after killing that sea-beast with his bare hands.

Davos takes his place three paces behind and left

Close enough to hear commands, far enough to stay clear of the sword's work

This is where I stand. This is what I do. Watch. Remember. Serve.

The first prisoner is dragged forward

Young man, maybe twenty, with the lean build of a ship's rigger

No defiance left in him, just the hollow look of a man who's seen his gods fail

"Name yourself," Stannis commands, voice carrying across stone like the crack of a whip

The young Ironborn lifts his head, salt-crusted hair falling back

"Quellon Drumm, Your Grace. Son of Donnel Drumm."

Accent thick as tar, words shaped by wind and wave

His hands shake as he speaks

Stannis raises the golden blade, light catching on its edge

"Quellon Drumm. You sailed under the banner of Aeron Damphair."

"You raised arms against the rightful king of Westeros."

"You worship false gods and practice blood sacrifice."

Each word falls like a hammer blow, measured and final

Davos watches the boy's face change

He thought there'd be trial. Thought surrender meant chains, not graves.

"Your Grace," Quellon says, voice cracking. "I yielded. I threw down my axe."

"Yielding does not wash away heresy," Stannis replies without pause

The sword descends in one clean stroke

No hesitation, no ceremony, just steel through neck

Blood pools on black stone, steam rising in the cold air

Quick, at least. Cleaner than drowning.

Stannis turns to the guards

"Next."

Voice unchanged, as if he'd just given orders about supplies

Second prisoner: an older woman with gray braids

"Asha Sunderly. I worship the Drowned God and answered the Damphair's call."

She meets Stannis' eyes without flinching

"I know what I am, Your Grace. Get on with it."

The sword takes her head as cleanly as the first

Third: a boy who can't be more than two and ten

Weeps openly, calls for his mother

Stannis recites the same charges in the same flat tone

Gods forgive us. Gods forgive him.

Davos counts the dead as they fall

Five. Ten. Fifteen.

The pile of corpses grows beside the chopping block

Blood runs in channels between the stones, seeking the sea

A woman tries to run

Makes it three steps before Ser Rolland's men tackle her

Dragged back to the block, screaming curses in the Old Tongue

Stannis waits until she's forced to kneel, then speaks his charges

The sword falls. Silence returns.

A guard leans close to whisper

"Ser Davos, there's near forty left. Sun's climbing high."

Davos nods, eyes fixed on his king's back

He'll kill them all. Every one. Won't even pause for water.

The golden sword never dims, never dulls

Each stroke cuts clean through bone and sinew

No chips in the edge, no blood staining the metal

That's not steel. That's something else wearing steel's shape.

Stannis calls for the next prisoner

His voice carries the same authority as when he started

No fatigue, no emotion, just duty being done

He could do this all day. All week. Until every Ironborn in the Seven Kingdoms knelt for his blade.

A girl is brought forward—maybe six and ten, with the lean frame of a ship's cabin boy

"Mya of Pyke. I... I'm just a saltwife, Your Grace."

Her voice breaks on the words, tears cutting tracks through grime

"Please. I ain't killed no one."

Stannis begins his recitation

"Mya of Pyke. You sailed under the banner of Aeron Damphair."

The girl sobs, shoulders shaking

"You raised arms against the rightful king of Westeros."

Davos steps forward without thinking

"Your Grace."

His voice cuts through the morning air, rough with salt and years

Stannis pauses, sword held high

The courtyard falls silent

Guards shift, hands moving to hilts

Prisoners look up with desperate hope

Said too much. Said it too loud. But I said it.

Stannis turns, blue eyes cold as winter sea

"Speak, Davos."

The name carries warning—choose your words careful, onion knight

Davos meets his king's gaze, feels the weight of service and friendship

"She's just a child, Your Grace. She didn't choose this."

Stannis lowers the sword but doesn't sheath it

"She served enemies of the crown. She worships the Drowned God."

"Her age does not absolve her of treason."

Voice like grinding stone, each word carved from certainty

Davos takes another step forward

"Your Grace, mercy is also justice. The Father teaches—"

"Do not presume to teach me the words of The Father."

Stannis' voice cuts like a blade, sharp enough to draw blood

The girl looks between them, hope and terror warring in her face

"Please," she whispers.

"I'll do anything. Just please don't kill me."

Her words hang in the air

Davos presses on

"Your Grace has shown mercy before. To me. To others who served you faithful."

"This girl... she's got years ahead of her. Years to serve the realm proper."

Come on, Stannis. Remember who you were before the sword started singing.

Stannis raises the blade again

"I was soft before. Weak. The Father has shown me the price of weakness."

"Justice is not negotiable, Davos. It is not subject to sentiment."

The golden light pulses brighter, and Davos feels something cold settle in his chest

The sword falls

Clean stroke, quick death

The girl's body crumples beside the others

That's what mercy looks like now. Quick and clean.

Davos steps back to his place

Hands trembling with more than cold

Stannis calls for the next prisoner

Voice unchanged, as if the conversation never happened

An old man stumbles forward, beard white with age and salt

The charges begin again: You sailed under the banner...

The killing continues

Methodical as tides, certain as dawn

Blood pools deeper, running toward the sea in dark streams

He'll kill them all. Every last one. And he'll sleep sound tonight.

The last Ironborn is a boy of maybe four and ten

Thin as a mast, all elbows and ribs beneath salt-stained leather

He doesn't weep or beg, just kneels and waits

Pride like an Iron Man at least.

Stannis raises the sword for the final time

Golden light bathes the courtyard in harsh radiance

Shadows dance on black stone, sharp as spear points

"You carry Greyjoy blood. You carry the taint of rebellion in your veins."

The boy lifts his head, meets the king's eyes

"Harren Greyjoy. My uncle said the sea would take us all in the end."

"Looks like he was wrong about that too."

Voice steady, no tremble in it

The sword falls

Quick cut, clean death

The last Ironborn joins his kin in silence

It's done. All of them. Every last soul.

Stannis wipes the blade clean on a guard's cloak

Golden steel unmarked by its work, bright as new-forged metal

He sheathes it with the same precision he used to kill

Seven and sixty dead, Davos thinks. I counted every one.

The courtyard empties slowly

Guards drag bodies toward the pyres already built on the shore

Servants arrive with buckets and brushes to scrub blood from stone

Like it never happened. Like they were never here.

Stannis turns to Davos

"See that the pyres are lit at sunset. Their smoke will carry word to the Iron Islands."

"Dragonstone has been cleansed of heretics."

Voice calm as still water, empty of doubt

Davos bows his head

"Aye, Your Grace."

What else can I say? What else can any of us say?

Stannis walks toward the castle

Back straight, stride steady

He looks like a king. Acts like one too.

The courtyard falls quiet save for the scrape of brushes on stone

Servants work in silence, eyes down

They're afraid. Afraid of him. Afraid of what he's become.

Davos walks to where the girl died

Blood still dark on black stone, not yet scrubbed away

He turns toward the sea

Waves crash against Dragonstone's foundation, endless and cold

A raven calls from the battlements

Black wings against gray sky

News to carry. Word to spread. The king's justice has been done.

Gods help us all.

Stannis remains the same self-righteous asshole he always is. I never understood why he is such a fan favorite. Stannis the Mannis indeed, scoff...
