FULL CHAPTER HERE —> AGAINST MY WILL 21B
Eighteen hours out from New York and the clouds outside the forward windows stared back at him like cotton balls. It was a beautiful sight, every time he got the chance to take it in and the command deck of Helicarrier Alpha made it no less beautiful. Eyes on white and blue as he stood there in battle dress with sleeves rolled up to his elbows and hands behind his back, Fury still couldn’t ignore the fact that his heart was still going.Eighteen hours since they left New York and twenty-four since the kid had rocketed off the Triskelion and his pulse had yet to fully come back down. It was a damn sight better than yesterday when he was breathing like a fat bastard on a broken escalator, but far from ideal all the same.
If he was a normal eighty-year old man, that would be one thing but Fury was pretty sure his body ran somewhere around forty-two.Forty-two and he was finally considering the pleasure of a pacemaker. No shame in that, of course; not when fear was part and parcel of being a human being. He definitely wasn’t going to let a living soul hear a word of it but shame? Not in the slightest. The sound of laughter pulled Fury’s eye back behind him, the deck running orange and red off dozens of screens — big, small, and in-between — color washing off faces and walls, the terminals several rows deep as the room was filled with squawking and general muttering that came with military command. His two top Sevens were back by one wall, heads together like siblings. Those two…Barton threw his head back for a laugh at one of his own jokes, Romanoff just looking at him with her chin down like she was considering a throat punch. Off to a war zone and they were treating it like a day trip.Neither of them bothered with battle dress either, the two Special Agents fine with being what they were and with no pretense of being military. Even with Barton being a Captain by technicality due to his tenure in SHIELD, the man simply grunted if anyone bothered to remind him of it.
Fury almost allowed himself a snort at the archer’s quirks, but the laugh couldn’t really make its way out of his chest. The folder under his arm was still in his mind as much as anything else, all the ugly parts in it sucking all the humor from everything else.
