“Hey, Fury!”Goddamnit. Too many curses flooded his thoughts but that one stood out the loudest and proudest as one fist clenched tight at Fury’s side. Goddamnit. The other gripped even harder around the barrel of his automatic rifle as he let out another quick burst toward some open hangar doors. God motherfucking damnit.Because nothing could just be simple. He wasn’t asking for easy. No, it was a fucking alien invasion; where would the ‘easy’ part of that even be?All Nick Fury wanted was something simple. But no— that was asking too much.Because of all the people in all the places on this entire whole goddamn planet, it just had to be him. What kind of godforsaken shit did I pull in a past life… Fury’s teeth grit tight again and tried to hold back a well-deserved scream. To deserve this bullshit? And that was an honest question.Unfortunately, there was no answer as Nick narrowed a single eye up at the giant green lightning bug above the military base, the kid’s fist glowing brighter than all the rest of him.Twenty-four hours ago, that boy had hovered right outside Fury’s office with enough power on that middle finger to turn the Triskelion into a pile of green-colored ruble across half the Upper Bay; a promise on those lips that if SHIELD ever went down, he’d be there to shake the last few trickles out to put out the ashes. With a fifth of SHIELD’s black ops dead and nearly a fifth of SHIELD’s total numbers burned in that same nuclear fire, it was looking like the exact worst day for him to cash in that particular promise.
The kid came down out of the sky just to stop about sixty feet up and hang there. Green light glared off him hard enough to wipe out even the idea of a shadow beneath him, arms crossed with an alien fleet above him as he put out enough of that light to make every radar operator from NORAD to Mexico — at least the ones that weren’t currently panicking — even more confused.
"Remember that whole thing about pissing on the ashes?" Those boots glowed as he dropped over a dozen feet further, sixty becoming forty-five as a platform of green formed under both his feet. "Let's hold off on that one."
