Yeah you're mistaken. The dad in this movie was such a bitch throughout. The wife had to do everything because he was afraid to stand up to McAvoy's character. From beginning to end, the dad was useless. Even in the end, the little boy had to be the one to kill McAvoy because the dad was so spineless.

Generally character traits like niceness, passivity, avoiding confrontation etc are seen as good things. The American dad and well the movie in general is about how it can sometimes be bad to be passive. Sometimes you have to stand up for yourself.
