The main GoT TV show gives a somewhat warped perception of the Targaryens. While yes many were problematic or outright cruel there were some good ones. Baelon Breakspear the current prince and hand of the king you met last episode is as Dunk said considered one of the most chivalrous, honorable and good willed knights and targaryens and many actually expect he would rule quite benevolently. The show contrasts this was a less charismatic more grumpy rigid Targaryen with Maekar in the same scene. Here you have Aerion Brightflame Targaryen however who believes himself to be a dragon in human form, he has a reputation of being dishonorable, cruel and malevolent, and as being touched by the "Targaryen madness". So knight of the seven kingdoms does a much better job of depicting that the Targaryens weren't mostly crazy, but they lean towards the I'll willed due to their sustained royal power and their beliefs.

Yes you nailed it with the name references. I haven't seen many people do that. Daeron is nicknamed Daeron the Dreamer. Fitting for the scene you meet him. Dragon dreams like king Viserys and daenys the dreamer. Daenerys had them too but the show cut those out.
