Hey everyone,

In several past posts there have been hints that something is in the works, that work is now over and available for you to try it out.

Brentwood Motel is a cinematic short adult/horror visual novel that uses animated stills (30 FPS looping animations) instead of the classic image renders that are slowly becoming obsolete. The purpose of Brentwood Motel is to show that animated images are perfect for visual novels, I might even say that they are much better than the current image formats. As with everything new there is a learning curve and Brentwood Motel is just the first step in that direction, there are others coming in the following months, the releases depend on how work on NBP is going and how much spare time I can find.

This is not an Episodic release, it's probably going to be a one and done unless there is overwhelming popular demand for more. The main project is and will remain NBP until its completion, I took some time to work on Brentwood Motel when NBP was in a good place with the renders and progress.

There is still much to learn but I believe that the first result is very promising. I plan to make the switch from still images to animations with the next big project after NBP is completed (No ETA or rush on that).

All Patrons can download and try it out in their respective Tier rewards page or over here : https://www.patreon.com/posts/14989906

Enjoy and let me know what you think! (No spoilers)

Definitely should continue

So is this eventually going to be the next monthly ep AVN after NBP is done? Or just a tech demo?

Medici

Love that you are pushing the boundaries. That really makes me want to continue supporting you

JustTheTipp

definitely continue with it

Keenir

I like these images very much; though I don't think image renders will ever be done and gone.

Huw Gryffin

I agree with Medici and JustTheTipp. It's very encouraging and will be interesting to see what is learned, what is liked and disliked and what ideas and possibilities emerge from the experience. With the introduction of animated stills, it seems it'll be a bit like the hybrid car in today's transportation market. Anyway, very exciting, providing, as you say, it doesn't take too much away from the primary project, NBP. PS/ Brentwood -> OJ Simpson? Any connection? I mean purely in the title selection, not the story itself.

Intteresting ideas here. Thank you for sharing them. Some of my initial feedback; 1) The animations in every single 'scene' seem like it is overdoing it. Especially when on a loop. Perhaps less obvious movements, like blinking animatinons and breathing so the loop does not look so out of place. 2) some of the animations suffer from some serious artifacts that don't look great. Not sure what is causing that, but perhaps another reason why not to use them everywhere. 3) Some of the larger swings of the camera are almost nausiating. Maybe don't loop them all, but have a single pass of the animation that stops in a freeze frame. 4) While this is meant to be an adult themed story, the sex sceen seems pretty forced. Not many would stop with death outside their door to have sex. That is usually reserved for a time when the participants have a respite and feel relatively safe. I think in general I would focus on not using so many animation loops, and those I did use, would be more subtle and things that don't look stange looped (blinks and breathing). Horror is not my thing, but I am sure a lot of people would dig this.

Will be interesting to see episodes eventually evolve into 30fps 2-5 hour movies with gfx rivaling live action with AI-generated voice acting (that actually sounds same as human voice actors rather than different flavors of Stephen Hawking's chair). Maybe in the 2030's.

It does not take away from NBP, I have been working on this project for the past two months, trying to squeeze it in every change I got. I think that there is a lot of potential in the animated stills idea, it clearly needs polishing and more development but this is only the first attempt. Also, no connection with OJ.

I dunno, I think I'd make the Grim Reaper wait a few if I was in one of my 5-year dry spells, if a decent girl that could pass for a model was offering. I really wouldn't want to test my reproduction instinct vs. that of self-preservation though if I can help it.

StrandedWithBenefits

Thanks for your feedback. The whole point of this short game was to test this new idea, some of the animations were weird and that's fine because it's the best way to test and learn. Everything was made in the span of about two weeks during the course of two months, whenever I found some free time to spare I would jump into it. I really think that the idea is the way to move forward but it still needs polishing and adapting, perhaps a hybrid solution at first would be ideal, that remains to be seen. Right now I'm focusing on NBP but I hope to have yet another short game in around two-three months for all Patrons, this time really heavy on the adult part of things.

I enjoyed BM a lot more once the Dramamine began to kick in. Seriously, though, for me it was a total bust. I don't honestly know (and it probably shows) how one critiques a proof of concept but based on my watching experience, I just cannot for the life of me understand how watching each and every shot consecutively rocking back and forth like a drunken shaman could ever be or become even remotely enjoyable, let alone considered to be an improvement in enjoyment. It was a constant annoyance that was severely negatively intrusive upon my focus on and enjoyment of the whole story. I am always open minded regarding any future developments, but that was my initial experience.

I liked it very much! I also agree that the still images are going to be replaced with attention holding motion sequences. Will benefit you incredibly to learn the direction now rather than play catch up. It certainly has much to improve, rocking with not be the constant but gives a clear idea of the constant motion/blur that will be. Just another great job by you Daniels K. good luck with this too!

StrandedWithBenefits

I mean it's clearly not for everyone and there are things to improve, that's the whole point of this exercise in case you missed it. I remember back when animated sex scenes were a rarity, probably even considered weird and now everyone is doing them. There's only one way forward, images can only get you so far even if you are a sober or a drunken shaman and the leap to straight out fully animated is too big to take at once. There are going to be one or two short games like this in the following months, depending on how much free time I can get my hands on, constructive criticism is welcome.

Frenzy Fire000

I know you had to put in a lot of time into this to get all the animation done. I say thank you very much, but I had to stop watching it halfway because of the moving all the time. Furthermore, I did like seeing the movements, but I feel it needs more still images in the longer conversations.

Huw Gryffin

This was my initial experience. I confessed to not knowing how to critique a proof of concept and I reiterate that, going forward, I am open minded regarding future developments in this direction. You asked for feedback and I gave it. I have not been made aware of being an instinctively negative person, but not all criticism can fall under the umbrella of positive criticism. Surely if, as I found myself in this instance, you do not like aspects of something, then I don't see any other way to register that dislike than in the form of negative criticism. One cannot always provide constructive criticism because, in my admittedly limited understanding at least, this implies that you are aware, or at least think you know, of a better way something might have been achieved. In this instance I am unable, through ignorance, to be able to offer suggestions or alternatives, and therefore my only recourse is to tell you, no I didn't like that or this didn't work for me. Again, I apologize if my tone was a little too acerbic or abrasive for the occasion. However, if only constructive criticism is required, then you will never know, from me at least, what bits I personally didn't like or that there even were bits I didn't like and will therefore, quite rightly, assume that I found my experience to be fine and dandy. I do not believe this helps either of us to improve matters in the slightest and surely defeats the whole of object of this admirable exercise. In no way did I intend my criticism to sound mean-spirited or churlish. I was just deflated and disappointed with the presentation of everything bar the story itself, which is, as usual, highly entertaining and intensely dramatic just the way it is. I also apologize for being long winded about everything. It is a curse from which I am afraid I seem utterly unable to break free. Perhaps it is, to some extent, the curse of liking the sound of my own keyboard too much. However, I do reply at length here, because I very much respect you as a creator, you are one of the best, and I, as so many other connoisseurs of fine writing, excellent characterization and damned pretty women, absolutely enjoy everything else you have created for us here. I've been a supporter for a reasonable amount of time now and as long as you are able to sustain the stratospherically high level of quality both narratively and (always with an eye for the ladies) visually demonstrated in DM and NBP, I fully intend to offer my support until the money runs out. I'm sorry if I have ruffled feathers, but I have my opinions and I am bound by the above philosophy to give them regardless of whether I be respected or ridiculed for my views. If you never, when asked, vote or voice your opinion, you will never be heard and you can never say you were not listened to or your views not taken into account. Being possibly, as a result ridiculed, argued against or labelled a complete and utter numpty or worse a meddling fool is the risk one must unavoidably take and the negative consequences of which one must have the backbone, the courage and the intestinal fortitude to endure and survive. So after all that, I do look forward to seeing where this spin-off goes and I wish all involved with it, not least your good self, the very best of good fortune in its hopefully successful realization.

RogueRat

A HORROR Adult Visual Novel... way too much on the scary side for my taste and purpose - not the genre I would go for, but I do like the art and concept very much!

StrandedWithBenefits

I know that it doesn't fit the pattern, honestly I really wanted to try out some horror and weird looking stuff just to get it out of my system if nothing else. The next one is super heavy on the erotic side and has nothing to do with horror.

Medici

Terrific to try to develop new approaches. I think you were overdoing the movements and they were too quick. They guy in the bed looked like he was hyperventilating. When people talk, try to go for small movements that make them look alive, like eyes blinking

Raza

definitely continue! Potential is insane and definitely a change from the usual stories out there. Medici says it right when he said the guy on the bed looked like he was hyperventilating lol.

LMArt

Amazing, I hope you turn Brentwood Motel into a full game cause we need more adult horror visual novels like this. Other than that I like the idea of animated loops. Can't wait to see what else you come up with.

Vette

Like the concept, however to much "Movement" can you move the characters and not the surroundings?

Daisame

I don't know if I have asked you, but asked some other adult creators... but have you considered using Unreal 5 to do you your scenes and even animations? I am sure the workflow is quite different, but the capabilities seem like they would provide some very interesting opportunities here. Since you would no tbe redistributing their code, just captures of animations, I don't know what licensing (if any) would be required.

V.G

It is interesting idea, good to experiment, but it felt like seasick after a while, bc whole view always moving, I would prefer static background with some dynamic/moving objects in it, what can actually move (characters idles, animals, devices), and constantly repeating same action of a characters in some cases looks weird like moving table back and forth to close the door. Looping animations doesn't look to convincing, I think it is better to have 1 loop and then static image instead, or loop every time text changes, just my opinion.

Ken Weeks

I like the idea but why have most of Maria's dialog in Spanish, that just seems a waste of effort unless you speak Spanish. I just hit through it, if you wanted to convey that she is Hispanic then just do the first couple of dialogs in Spanish then back to English.

StrandedWithBenefits

She has only a small number of Spanish lines compared to her English lines. Also, she mentions in game that she speaks Spanish when she's scared, her actions and behavior as well as her speaking a foreign language serves to show that she is terrified.

Neil Davies

I liked it, except for the parts where the entire scene was rocking back and forth (as mentioned by V.G.). I hope you continue the story, whether in this new format or another format

Neil Davies

@Daisame - clearly you've never hung out with any combat arms soldiers! Of course we'd pause while death is just outside the door if it means getting some nooky!

Bill S

I really liked this proof of concept. I would love to see it developed into a full Visual Novel. The mix of horror, mystery and hotness make for a compelling combination.

DaBigGreek

This was a real fun PoC! Would be so worth a build out. Also a good segway to the MC of Rosewood Manor with his involvement (sort of a Prequel)
