-- Bleach 2-3 --

For the syncing problems, I believe it was an issue of sub vs. dub timing, the platforms appearing to actually be the same. Let me know if anyone else has issues!

Something important to keep in mind as you watch the anime, is that Orihime’s character often gets an unfair shake compared to how she did in the manga. A lot of her scenes and internal moments from Kubo's original work did not make it into the adaptation—especially early on—which makes her come off as much less layered than she really is. She probably has the most cut content out of all the main characters, so heads up, I’ll probably be bringing her up a lot in the upcoming episodes ^_^U Here’s a list of some key moments that were cut or downplayed in episodes 2 and 3 of the anime. It’s a bit long, but that just goes to show how much nuance got stripped away: In the manga, Orihime is dreamy but emotionally observant. There are small moments that show she actually gets Ichigo's personality beyond his scary appearance—like how she thinks his scowl is kind of funny and even cute. The anime flattens this, turning her more into a "silly girl" comic relief early on. The manga gives us glimpses into Orihime’s thoughts, showing her nervousness around Ichigo and hinting at feelings she doesn’t fully understand. There's even a moment of her berating herself for not accepting Ichigo's offer to walk her home. These are largely missing in the anime, which removes the more introspective side of her character. Then there's her friendship with Tatsuki. Their bond is more fleshed out in the manga. A longer scene before the Hollow attack even includes a hilarious Orihime fantasy involving her and Ichigo at a park... which somehow turns into a foot race/assassination. You kinda have to see it to get it XD It’s a funny but meaningful moment that shows her imagination and her dynamic with Tatsuki. In the manga, it’s revealed that Orihime and her brother Sora came from an abusive home. Their parents were often drunk, neglectful, or even violent, so by the time Sora was 18 and Orihime was 3, he ran away with her to protect her—essentially raising her as more of a daughter than a sister. The anime cuts this entirely, making their relationship seem more “normal” and less emotionally loaded. The anime simplifies how Sora dies. In the manga, his mask doesn't just vanish when he regains his humanity—he actually breaks it AND stabs himself in the head using Ichigo’s sword without his consent, while Ichigo was still holding it, implying he took his own life to stop himself before gave into his monstrous side. In fact we don't even get a good look at his face. It comes across as a more haunting moment that gives him agency, but it’s toned down a lot in the adaptation. Some of these changes might seem minor on the surface, but when it comes down to it, they really affect how Orihime is perceived—not just in these episodes, but quite a few episodes going forward. The manga presents her as emotionally complex, quietly strong, imaginative, and deeply shaped by her past. The anime just doesn't highlight those things as clearly.

Hey Jack, I still have some issues with syncing, but I think I know how to solve it. I am watching sub on a third party plattform but your timestamps for the dub version fit perfectly. However after the eyecatcher in the middle, I am out of sync again. Theres seems to be some scene after the opening and after the eyecatcher that is 8 seconds long that causes the issue. Don't know what exactly that is, maybe because of a difference from japanese and western version or something... Maybe you could just show the bottom of the screen during and after the eyecatcher once to confirm this. Anyway, it's possible to resync by pausing 8s after the eyecater. TL;DR: If anyone has syncing problems, pause 8 seconds after the opening (or use the timestamp for dub) and then pause again for 8 seconds after the eyecatcher.

JackTheBus

Going forward I will put a bit of the screen on in between the eyecatcher! Wish there was another way but this seems like the only possibility. Thank you for the help!

Tealeaf

Thank you for being an orihime defender so many people dislike her (although some people are just sexist, but some of it is definitely the anime)

Tatsuya

I appreciate u doing this, I had no idea her character was like that and still would find her a tad annoying and basic to this day

MakkaPakka

On disney plus, the starting time for sub is 1:49. I have to match the light change reflected off jack to see where i am lmao

TripleZed

the gap between the sub and dub timer is 8 seconds so you could just match the dub at the beginning then match to the sub after the eyecatcher

B3lr1an

Yeah I'm starting to wonder if Disney plus in europe has some kind of different start for whatever reason.

Really means a lot to hear that, especially since Orihime’s character can easily get misunderstood or dismissed without context. A big part of the issue is definitely how the anime adapted her. It cuts a lot of her more thoughtful, emotional, and sometimes hilarious moments from the manga, which makes her seem a bit flatter or more one-note than she really is. Orihime’s a quieter, more introspective character, so it’s easy to miss how emotionally grounded she is when some of her depth gets lost in translation The anime also has another problem with how it leans into a more romantic tone between certain characters that wasn’t nearly as prevalent in the manga, which can unintentionally shift how viewers interpret the relationships and dynamics.

MakkaPakka

since disney bought the rights to it and the thousand year blood war sequal, crunchyroll no longer has it

Yes, the reason you strike from behind that Rukia was hinting at was psychological. It's for safety since you strike from the blind spot, but also for your own mental well being because what happens if you see the Hollow's face and you recognize them?? That kind of thing might haunt you, especially if you are the one that sliced them. Worse case scenario after striking from the front is what happened to Ichigo where he sliced from the front and the hollow survived his attack, so now he has to fight a hollow with an identity of someone he knows which means he hesitated to kill it. He might have lost and died after he hesitated if Orihime had not jumped in the way.

DiamonDust

@Cunning Linguist The platform you can see it on depends on where you live. It's on Hulu in the US, everywhere else it's on Disney Plus. Disney owns Hulu, so they can make it region specific like that.

DiamonDust

Awesome info there that enhances her character for sure. As a (mostly) anime only viewer, I actually think that Orihime's best arc is the first one by a landslide, and then it gradually goes downhill from there. First arc she is likeable and funny, but from Soul Society arc onward she really just becomes a damsel in distress type character that I can't stand. It feels like the sexist shonen writing you see all too commonly. Not the worst I have seen, but still pretty bad especially considering Bleach's amazing female cast by comparison (and cast in general). In Fullbring arc and TYBW she improves a bit in that aspect, but not as much as I would like and it's so late in the game by that point that the damage was already done. I can't imagine the manga would change my mind about that unless they completely rewrote entire arcs, but who knows.

DiamonDust

@Tealeaf There are legitimate reasons to dislike a character besides being sexist or a bad adaptation lol. I explain my reasoning briefly above, but I actually find that Orihime was a good character who suffers from being written as a damsel in distress.

Your comment includes spoilers and strong framing that might affect Jack’s experience, assuming he reads it. I highly recommend removing or editing it so he can go in without being influenced too heavily. Just to be clear, I’m not trying to push him to like or dislike any character—I just think it’s fair to point out where the anime adaptation might underrepresent certain character moments, especially for someone watching blind. Orihime, in particular, lost a lot of key scenes that made her more well-rounded in the manga. Jack deserves to see that side of her too, even if he ends up forming a different opinion—and that’s totally fine.

Alaskan Bull Worm is funny lol, also don't worry if you forget things, Bleach has a lot of terminology, some later are revealed as if they were explained before but they aren't.
