So there's two different things going into Mai's death empowering Maki so much, Jujutsu sorcery itself recognizes them as one individual person, Maki's heavenly restriction erases all of her cursed energy but in return gives her insane physical prowess. It's the exact same as Toji, but Mai didn't get this restriction, she had a tiny bit of cursed energy and even a cursed technique in her creation powers (which she used to make the cursed tool to give Maki). Additionally, the power system here cares a lot about like, attitude and intention. Maki wants to grow stronger and stronger, but Mai doesn't. Since they are seen as one person by the magic power system of the series, Mai's desire to just stay at the bottom and stay weak is directly holding Maki back from growing stronger. So 1) Once Mai dies, it's as if that "one" person has stopped holding back and is going all out now. 2) That "one" person who was given the heavenly restriction of "no cursed energy for increased strength" seemed to have cheated the system somehow by still having a little cursed energy. Once Mai dies and that cursed energy is fully gone, Maki's heavenly restriction can now fully give what it was supposed to, Toji level strength

Ya I didn’t like the toji panel but the rest was amazing

Juzo Kumiya was the crazy guy from season 1 that kept saying he wanted to make a coat rack out of Gojo's bones, if you remember. Last episodes, Maki asks Tengen for a favor and mentions Juzo Kumiya's atelier... basically, his workshop. That's where she got the first sword she walked in with. Then taht whole sequence with Maki & Mai was Mai taking the cursed energy with her so that Maki could finally be complete since Mai was holding her back. At the same time, Mai used her Construction technique to create Maki's sword with the last bit of her life. (We also saw Mai use Construction during hers and Maki's fight in season 1 during the tournament where she created a bullet inside her gun.) And, in dying, Mai completely freed Maki from cursed energy. Since Maki's heavenly pact gave her extreme physical prowess in exchange for not having cursed energy, Maki was technically nerfed while Mai was alive because Mai had cursed energy and a cursed technique. The universal laws of Jujutsu sorcery treat them as one single person, so Mai's cursed energy was kinda breaking Maki's heavenly pact and weakening her physical prowess. Now, she's at 100%.

the whole like, attitude/intention thing comes back from s1 during the baseball game actually LMAO- Gojo explains it to Megumi, and then Megumi flashes back to it at the end of s1 when he unlocks his domain expansion Everything is is just piecing together what all Mai meant by "Jujutsu recognizes twins as one individual"

About how Mai dying made Maki stronger, not a manga reader so this is just my interpretation based on what's been said. Maki's heavenly restriction was basically the same as Toji's, but since she's an identical twin Mai mentions here in the eyes of jujutsu they're the same being, so it's kinda nerfing Maki since she has a bit of cursed energy from Mai. Mai dying unlocks her full potential. Oh and the sword was definitely Mai doing a pact with the rest of her lifeforce just to craft that with her technique.

Everybody in JJK, including Non sorcerers all have cursed energy of some degree. Toji was the first person in history to have a heavenly restriction which granted him no cursed energy (BAD THING IN JJK WORLD) but in exchange was physical gifted beyond anyone else. The basis of a heavenly restriction is similar to equivalent exchange (FMAB). Maki and Mai are identical twins with one having a heavenly restriction (Maki). Due to JJK considering twins the same and heavenly restrictions being placed at birth, Mai existing was a handicap for having cursed energy which was also the reason for maki still have small traces(one heavenly restriction for two children isn't an equal exchange basically), which hindered her Heavenly restriction from fully manifesting like Toji's was. on top of that, Mai had no desire to get stronger (although I think if she did, it would make maki weaker). Mai used the last remaining ounces of her cursed energy on top of what was in maki to create an identical copy of the Split Soul Katana, which is what toji also used to fight Geto.

Yep, Mai's technique is creation and it allows her to convert her own life force / energy into physical matter. She usually uses a small amount of energy to create revolver rounds but here she pushed it to the extreme and gave everything she had left to create an exact replica of the soul splitting katana which was previously wielded by Toji against Geto in hidden inventory.
