Higuruma with these 2 episodes became one of my favorites in the show hands down. I loved these episodes

Higuruma vs Yuji is PEAK FUCKING CINEMA, they did such a good job with the adaption of it. Why are you crying Jack? Because it's that fucking good and hits the emotions so well, and I'm also crying.

Higuruma is my FAVORITE character in this show I love him so much good GOD, and Yuji's "Yeah, I killed them" moment soooo peak, everything about this part is just perfect Also to like, restate Higuruma's goals with not helping at first: Imagine if the law was just magically enforced, something universally unbreakable like gravity. The rules of the culling game aren't perfect for that ends obviously, but if they are enforced in such a way, the culling game could serve as the basis for a world where something like "murder is forbidden" becomes a simple fact, not a legal law put in place and enforced by people

While Higuruma was considered a genius lawyer, at the end of the day, what he wanted to do was help the "weak and ugly," the innocent... even going so far as turning down a promotion to judge. However, despite being a genius lawyer, the legal system continuously failed him. That, combined with the people he's defending thanking him profusely and then immediately turning against him and putting the blame on him wore him down and jaded him. Then, he's presented with a new magical system. The reason he turned Yuji down initially is because he wanted to learn the ins and outs of this new system. If this magical system was absolute, it could finally be the system he's been wishing for. At the same time, because he was jaded with the legal system, I feel like he was trying to convince himself as well that he could be this brutal sorcerer taking people down and essentially prosecuting players within this system. The most telling example of this is in episode 55, Higuruma asks Yuji as he's getting out of the tub, "Have you ever killed someone who ticked you off? It feels better than expected." Only for him to reveal the truth at the end of 56, "Have you ever killed anyone of your own will? It feels absolutely awful, doesn't it?" Yuji essentially reminded Higuruma of why exactly he became a lawyer in the first place.
