Gaban's name has been known, and so has his design. His first appearance would've technically been in episode 8 during Buggy's flashback but unlike Rayleigh he was removed in the anime adaptation of that chapter (I assume we'll see him in the WIT Studio remake of that scene tho). If you go back, he's always there right next to Roger and Rayleigh during the Oden flashback in Wano and the God Valley flashback on Egghead. They call him Ya-san because his name in japanese is written as Gyaban and his epithet "Mountain Eater" is yamagurai in japanese. Him being the left-hand man is also why Luffy says this is what Sanji will be like when old, lil' parallel.

3 things: First is that his name is pronounced Scopper Gyaban, with the Mr Ya coming from the G'ya'ban. We didn't know in English till this chapter dropped i believe. Everyone knew it as Gaban for years He was hinted at on the cover of chapter 631 drinking with Crocus drinking together on the twin capes so this reveal was a long time coming of years speculating whether this man in the cover was either Scopper or Shiki the lion The title 'mountain eater' doesn't come from destroying a mountain ... it actually comes from marrying Ripley ;)

He was in the Oden flashback for sure. When they were getting supplies in town and someone just tossed a grenade under Oden, that's where I recall him from. I'm sure there were other scenes.

When you said, "Low key" I thought you were saying, "Loki" lol. Also look up the Chapter 631 manga cover, that was the first time this guy was truly foreshadowed. Also whoever the director for this episode is has an ass style characters look like they're moving in jelatin half the time, its too zoomed in, the music placement is weird, camera is almost always facing the front of a characters face so they don't have to draw them at an angle/draw them in groups. Dude got 2 new soundtracks in this episode and a Roger Pirate reveal and episode had 0 hype how do you even pull that off as a director. Like they couldn't even animate him spinning that key 360 degrees which is like the big episode ending shot, his hand was static and when it twisted in a way where it would be too visible they just zoomed in on the side of the key and then unzoomed back.

The worst kept mystery in one piece Manga was who was the guy waiting for Luffy. Everyone knew it was scopper Gaban mostly because of the cover story

Gaban was heavily featured in the Oden/Roger flashback. He wasn't as noticeably as the characters we already knew like Shanks, Buggy, Rayleigh and Crocus but he was in plenty of scenes. He duels Oden during the Whitebeard vs Roger pirates battle, and there is even a scene where Gaban along with Oden, Shanks and Buggy get attacked while shopping for food in Mock Town.

Also Roger deliberately sprinted out to cross swords with Oden when Gaban and Rayleigh was already about to fight him. Both Gaban and Rayleigh were like “You just want to fight him yourself!” He was always there just never given the title card.

Yes that scene stood out to me too. But apparently it was anime original episode, not canon sadly. It was good adaptation and it was wholesome seeing how Gaban, Shanks and Buggy bonded with Oden. Also Oden was stealing supplies and Gaban was angry at him like we don’t steal from civilians. But then many bad guys showed up. They thought Oden died for a sec and laughed out of relief when he came back with the supplies.

That Oden making oden(the hot pot) episode is not canon sadly. A good and wholesome adaptation though. Gaban was scolding and warning Oden like he was doing here to Luffy which is hilarious to me.
