Only gets better from here

So idk why the anime didn't display this, but in episode 599 when Smiley "transformed" the manga had an info box that said "Smiley Master's Pet (gel-form poison gas that ate the Sala-Sala fruit, Axolotl model)" which is why the SHs on the other side of the lake thought it was a frog/lizard

Oh, How deep does the rabbit hole go.... Strap in jack its only getting started.

chrisis

here we go!

Kinemon does feel pain when cut up by law, he is just so stubborn he didn't want to admit it was painful so he just said it was itching instead.

SimStu

He's finally here! This story won't stop unraveling for 400+ episodes, and it's fantastic

DiamonDust

It's likely purposeful. It was probably just to keep the viewer in suspense of wtf smiley actually is, it's a twist they reveal at a later time in the anime instead of this episode. Personally, I think it works better being revealed later. I usually prefer mysteries being revealed later in an arc, and tbh Oda usually does it that way so it's not that weird of a change. It was not really necessary to reveal this to Jack ahead of time, the anime has it's own reveal moment.

I like the payoff for a plot point made way, way back right at the start, about pirate spies joining the navy. Back when Koby first wanted to join the navy.

Zoro9978

jack you should make a poll about your next anime after super.

Also "Joker" was mentioned back in Saboady as the person who owned the Slave Trading shop, so the human/mermaid trafficking business is also run by him

pablo

it ddoes hurt he is just being priddeful

DiamonDust

It was a bit different than that. The "Joker" alias was not mentioned until Punk Hazard. Back then we saw Disco talk to Doflamingo himself over den den mushi, and we found out Doflamingo owned that shop. When Disco asked him to save the shop he told Disco that he could have the shop, as he is not interested in the slave trade anymore, but in "smiles". It showed Doflamingo had underground connections, and excellently foreshadowed the reveal way later that he was the "Joker" person we first heard about in Punk Hazard who we knew was an infamous underground broker.

I'm pretty sure Jack still watches ahead of his posts. With this being a shorter arc, I'm assuming he's either already done with it or close to the end Do you have an episode number for when they reveal Smiley's devil fruit in the anime? I remember the first time I watched this arc I had no idea Smiley had a df, I only found out because I talked with someone who had read the manga I know the anime has taken liberties to alter the content from the manga in the past, but this is one of the cases where I think they really fumbled it. I'm not saying Oda is a perfect writer, but I think he's pretty careful with revealing certain information in order to set up certain connections for the readers. Which is why I don't think the anime made the right choice in changing this reveal given a specific event that happens later this arc

Ben

not sure the episode, but they definitely tell you about the devil fruit for smiley later

DiamonDust

@Mimi I honestly don't remember exactly when they reveal it, but it was something that was firmly ingrained in my mind and I am an anime only. I guess it's possible I heard it elsewhere...? I doubt they would leave that important detail out though. I will just see if I notice it as I watch Jack's reactions, cause I don't want to comb through to try to find it. I think you may be right in this case that Jack finished Punk Hazard, I heard that from someone else. I usually just assume he is not ahead to be safe. I think I heard he has a anilist to see how far he is, but idk where the link is. Assuming he is done with the arc, no harm done in that regard. And yeah, Oda does not usually show things arbitrarily as you said. Even the anime usually shows those reveal plaques though, I don't think they normally get skipped like that. To me that indicates that it was purposeful in some capacity. It's possible Oda may have even signed off on it or requested it, who knows. I just don't see the studio making that change themselves with no permission from Oda since that's an important reveal. I don't find fault with Oda for the manga reveal, there was nothing wrong with it. For me personally, I just think it's more enjoyable as a mystery the way the anime does it. There is an important scene that makes no sense initially without that reveal, but to me that only deepens the entertaining mystery of the events of Punk Hazard. Once you learn about Smiley's DF, I seem to remember the anime gives you a 2nd glance at the apple or something just to make the implication more obvious. I remember it being obvious and not confusing by the end of the arc what had actually occurred in that scene with the sack of apples. I could be horribly horribly wrong about this, we will see. Regardless of what is "better" writing, I see the anime as a separate piece of media and I think a reactor should prob not be told important info about something yet to happen in the anime even if manga revealed it earlier. Especially cause I like seeing Jack's look of surprise like any viewer would. I would want the same if I was reacting. Sounds like Jack is past Punk Hazard though, so I'm no longer concerned about this.
