jon do

i don't know if you still feel the same way about the koruzumi thing now donut because of how poor the kurozumi situation was handled it's still not clear as it should be but the way oda did this wasn't good at all, in orochis flashback, it was mentioned that the people of wano hunted down the koruzumi family simply because of the one family members actions. the whole family weren't an evil force, just look at konjaros backstory, it wasn't shown/said his family did anything, theywere just mentioned being actors. even in an sbs after wano ended i believe oda mentioned otama being a kurozumi but for some reason didn't think making that a focus point in the story was important. instead what we got in story was her simply having purple hair(which konjuro has red hair so does that even matter) and in a small flashback, a tombstone of her family that said koruzumi i believe, but for some reason that wasn't translated for us in English... though even if that was translated to us, it still wasn't made to be a big deal, especially considering how much flashback we got at the end of wano about other stuff, how many people would even be thinking about the little otama flashback we got and realizing oh, the koruzumi aren't demons from birth. the kurozumi persecution stuff we did get was little especially in a big arc like wano. the fact that the people of wano learned nothing, never self reflected about why orochi got as bad as he did and just went on praising the entire kozuki family as the best thing ever and oda didn't have the narrator say something like "the people of wano may be liberated in one way but theres still a darkness they overlook, called discrimination, this will be something that will come back up later" something like that, but no, hiyori just insults a mans linage who was persecuted and was basically genoncided and that was made as a gotcha quip by oda which we were suppose to cheer with hiyori and wano???? its very boggling considering oda made fishman island and characters like queen otohime and fisher tiger. even the celestial dragons aren't shown to be all evil beast, we understand why the celestial act the way they do, but in wano, i don't know what was going through odas mind, the way he wrote it just felt like he didnt care if you thought of all the kurozumi as all bad or not. you feeling this way about kurozumi is understandable because of how lax oda was with the kurozumi persecution stuff, it passes the mind, especially if someones reading weak to weak. but on a postive note, enjoyed the wano reactions very much donut, and especially loved the gear 5 reaction and appo and numbers comments, and also your utter disgust for the cover stories, LOL.

Donut Reactions

I totally get where you are coming from, but at the same time here is my interpretation of what Oda was going for. First and foremost, without getting into the interpretation of the Kurozumi's overall, let me say why I loved the line and cheered for it. While, yes, it is his family name, I took it more as a "throwing your own insult back in your face". Oden wouldn't be Oden if it wasn't boiled. And Kurozumi (Orochi) wouldn't be Kurozumi (charcoal) if it didn't burn. But that pun doesn't work if it's "Orochi was born to burn". Now, about the Kurozumi family. Absolutely they were mistreated and the people of Wano pushed them to the point they were at. But that isn't even what turned them evil. It was the old hag and old geezer, who were working with Kaido. I also REALLY wish Oda put more focus on the Kurozumi backstory, but my interpretation was always that the Kurozumis were similar to Arlong or Moria or Doflamingo. They were in a situation in which you could justify them becoming evil, but they go FAR FAR beyond what you could ever justify as vengeance. Contrast that with characters like the Kozukis or the Vassals who were also all in similar situations but didn't succumb to evil. The Kozuki's were ALSO almost "genocided" (feels distasteful to use that for just a family though). Dogstorm, Catviper, and Kawamatsu were all literally being burned at the stake by the people of Wano, but they didn't instantly try and get Whitebeard or Roger to overthrow the damn kingdom. As much as One Piece is an idealist world in a lot of ways, it also comes with the realism that sadly some people in every country are gonna be fucked up. And you're probably gonna get persecuted for something outside your control. And that's the fork in the road where you have to decide if you're going to use that anger to help make the world a better place so it happens less, or if you're just gonna say fuck it and make life better for you only. What happened to Kanjuro is awful. Straight up facts. But my dude didn't have to go full Joker and gaslight everyone in his life for 20 years. Coulda just become Batman. Coulda just been a real goddamn vassal and changed the country for the better. But the Kurozumi's were enveloped by their own burning hatred for every one else but them. They were born to burn. Especially when Orochi was given opportunity after opportunity after opportunity. And lastly. Queen Otohime sucks. Highly recommend re-reading her flashback if you haven't in a long time. Now THAT is something that I have no fucking clue what Oda was trying to do with her introduction.
