SMR please do research on what the crashing of used car prices does to the new car market.

Rob VS

Many analysts are saying that demand for Model Y & 3 is cratering due to high prices and a pending recession, and saying that Tesla won't be able to produce a cheaper car soon enough to serve less wealthy consumers. Even the Tesla community is fearing that margins will be slashed if Tesla is forced to drop prices in order to generate more demand. Has everyone forgotten that the Model Y LR is supposed to be priced at $50k? Even if we factor inflation, we're at around $55k. At this time, the current price on Tesla's web site starts at $66k (US delivery). Which means that the price can come down a lot before cutting into what the margins were intended to be. Imagine the increase in demand in 2023 if the price for a Model Y LR drops to $60k, then subtracting the $7500 from the Biden Inflation Bill making the final purchase price $52,500. That's more than $13k below the current price, and margins will still be way above what Tesla originally intended. And if they're able the get the government kickbacks for US made batteries, their margins will barely be affected at all. The Tesla Economist has a recent video with a great breakdown of how Tesla will maintain margins even after a massive price drop - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpICA5ZXOHs. As for the lack of backorders right now, my theory is that Tesla is intentionally minimizing backorders so that they can lower prices in early 2023 while still getting the higher premium from people who ordered in 2022 at a higher price.
