p.s. FWIW, my household was already using Amazon when this letter was published. My Dad (OG internet nerd, long story) began using it in the 90's to import electronics and other bits and pieces. It was much cheaper to buy most things via Amazon (or occasionally elsewhere online) than in Australia so we did exactly that.
