Holy technique batman! That's a whole lot more complex than I imagined it to be. Obviously I was aware that the technical side would be different then standard play and I admit, I don't know much about that to begin with.. Few questions that I got curious about; did you learn these different techniques that you combine over a long period of time? I would imagine that this probably took a while to discover and get sounding 'right'. Also how on earth can you play like this and sing at the same time? You're already not in a very natural breathing position to start.. But with all the technical aspects, just seems sooo difficult. I'm just wondering how you've figured out how this could work. As for songs.. Perhaps Eyrie may be interesting to cover because it's sounds more 'classical'? Must have been a very interesting song to write for? Else Pyrrhic or my favourite As Icicles fall. Thanks for the tutorial though, absolutely amazing!

Thanks so much for sharing this Tim. I am curious about your choice of notes. Are you following on in (Harmonic?) minor ? or do you pull some other notes in through modal interchange?

Eva

Thank you Tim, that war really interesting. Now I know what to look for when watching people play. I‘m going to second Joeys question: how do you sind while playing? And do you know if artists like Apocalyptica use techniques similar to yours? A cello might be played in a similar way as a violin , for all I can tell 😉

João Eiras

Ah ! Listening to you playing the harmonics and over the bridge was quite jarring as anyone that has learned to play the violin will now. But listening to everything played in sequence during the solo sounded amazing ! Some songs you use some light pizzicato, but have you tried some more virtuous passages with spiccato+pizzicato like in Caprice no. 24 ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cfWJop0LZ0#t=2m44s Now I'm eagerly awaiting for you to record some violin play-throughs, like songs like Eerie or Forget Not :p

Honestly there is only one part in any of our songs where there is more than a 1-2 second overlap of me singing and playing at the same time and that is in Libera just after the first group vocal part. But this part doesn't involve any of these "metal" style violin techniques which makes it manageable to play. Honestly, I'm not sure if I could do a solo/lead in this style and sing at the time time... maybe with lots of practice. :p - Tim

As for the different techniques: I learned slides from playing Jazz. The point of contact was something you learn as a classical violinist but just not told to play on the bridge except in ponticello so that was just me experimenting and discovering some new sounds. To be honest though I didn't actually master this playing style until CITADEL. There are elements of this on POI songs, you hear the "guitar squeal" affect in beginning of Plague etc. however it was in songs like Tempest Pt 1, DMC Pt 2 & Pyrrhic where I really pushed the envelope and started making sounds I had never made before. A lot of that was just me experimenting and finding results that excited me so I kept pushing more and more to find new sounds when I was composing. - Tim

I mostly am following the key of the song, sometimes I am playing a natural minor scale without the raised 7th, and there are other bits in songs where I introduce some modal elements as well, so it's a bit of a mixture.

Ah, I was expecting complexity and, well, I got it. Many thanks for sharing, Tim!

I remember you guys had a link to some drum or bass sheet music, any plans on releasing violin sheet music?

Thank you for this, it was even more helpful than I could've hoped for. It answered a lot of my questions and theories as to how you achieved your sounds, and how I could create similar effects. I'd never even been told about ponticello, and I've played violin for about 4 years now. Will certainly be practicing it. For a future tutorial, could you perhaps go over tips on how to write songs on violin, especially for metal, and combining it with other instruments and vocals? There's plenty of wonderful violinists in metal, but none that I've found have as well blended it with the rest of the sound, and made it feel both cohesive and a core part of the music without it only being used as a contrast or juxtaposition. Which of course you also do wonderfully, as there's plenty of juxtaposition in NeO's music, but there seems to be just as many parts where the violin isn't treated any differently than the guitar or drums. At least it doesn't feel that way to the listener, or me at least. Also, is there any possibility of sheet music being released as there's been for guitar and bass? (Or at least a tutorial on learning by ear so we could possibly learn without it?) Thank you again.

Hey Tim! Thank you for making this video! It was very interesting! I hope to see more sweet violin videos in the future! I know in particular I would love to see some tutorials on some of songs like Painters of the Tempest Part III, Libera Part II, and the beginning of And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope!
