Best of 2020 so far?

Lewis Allan

This is going to be out of left field for NeO fans I would think, but my top album of 2020 so far is 'Mourn' by Assemblage 23. This album has everything I love about the Industrial/Synthpop genre. It's heavy, it's melodic, it has powerful lyrics, and it's perfect for a Goth club dancefloor.

Dan Schieffer

Rémy Alarçon

Clearly the two best albums of the year so far, imho, are "Virus" by Haken and "Palimpsest" by Protest The Hero. But I really have to mention "Void" by Luna’s Call, because this album is really solid (possibly in my personal top-5 of 2020) and it’s somehow close to NeO in terms of musical genre and influences. (Also, if re-recordings have to be counted, "Truth Inside The Shades (15th Anniversary)" by Persefone is to be mentioned.)

Ricky

Another shout-out to Protest The Hero - Palimpsest and Igorrr - Spirituality and Distortion

BK

Albums I've been enjoying this year: Black Crown Initiate - Violent Portraits..., Cloudkicker - Solitude (although it loses steam towards the end), Def Leppard - London to Vegas (live set - what a joy to listen to all these classics again after so many years - and they sound great live too!), GoGo Penguin - S/T, Oceans of Slumber - S/T and Pure Reason Revolution - Eupnea (except for the song "Maelstrom" which I utterly loathe).

BK

Although it's from 2019, I only discovered Finsterforst's "Zerfall" this year and absolutely love it! Their album "Mach Dich Frei" from 2015 is also solid. They call it Black Forest Metal and it's friggin' epic. Love it! I speak no German at all but I find their music so heavy with atmosphere and emotion that my lack of understanding makes no difference. They could be singing about the perils of piles for all I know. Check out the truly epic (there's that word again) "Ecce Homo" from Zerfall - it's 36 minutes of pure...black...foresty metally goodness. Yes, that one track goes for 36 minutes.

BK

Lastly, just because it's Devin and I am a huge fan, some of his output this year has been exceptional - he's released a lot of stuff, whether it's ambient, acoustic, pop, extreme metal (yay for Stampy's Blaster!) or even his podcasts that take you on a journey into his emotional states when creating records from his past....it's just been an amazingly prolific period for him. Oh, and he's done all these rather interesting online concerts, some of which raised funds for health services. A total class act and an extraordinary human. Looking forward to Order of Magnitude, Lightworks, The Moth...and whatever is coming next. BTW, Gene Hoglan will be a guest at his upcoming Halloween show. Get on it! :)

Valerie Syren

Aether Realm: 'Redneck Vikings from Hell' - I absolutely love those guys.

First: John Petrucci - Terminal Velocity (instrumental trio fun with JP, finally reunited with Mike Portnoy on drums and Dave La Rue on bass) . Second is the Belgian band Thurisaz, who are certainly not very well known internationally, though already existing since 1997, but really have delvered a remarkable album with "Re-Incentive" now in 2020!

Scott Robinson

The two stand-out albums for me are: Haken - Virus Memories of Old - The Zeramin Game

William Magill

Still trying to weigh up newer ones (still the honeymoon period?) vs some of the older ones that might not have grabbed me. Anaal Nathrakh - Endarkenment: it's 100% 'thrakh, and as good as ever Fleshvessel - Bile of Man Reborn: one 24-minute track of experimental death, with bits of piano and choir and 80s synth. Wasn't sure at first but keep going back. Malist - To Mantle the Rising Sun: Disappointed at first, didn't seem as good as their debut. Good thing I revisited a couple of times, because it really is great melodic BM. Uada - Djinn: I swear it's got a bit more of a rock swagger, and it's not without its flaws, but at the end of the day it's really quite catchy. Havukruunu - Uinuos syömein sota: putting the epic in epic black metal Maybe some others like Kvaen, Sweven, Daniel Deluxe, and there are a number above that I haven't heard yet, as well as more recent releases like Pallbearers...

William Magill

I only came across the Rannoch weeks ago, rather later than its release. But also Omnivortex last month too, which was fantastic.
