Wow. Big change. I hope you guys find somebody who fits in well. Good luck to you guys, and good luck to Dan.

It weights heavy in the heart to see Dan go. I hope his new endeavors will fill him with joy. I am already looking forward to what’s to come in NeO camp. Hugs to all.

This is incredibly disappointing news indeed, for obvious reasons. But what's even more disappointing is the manner in which Dan's departure has been announced. Surely a seventeen year relationship (which saw the band's profile grow, due in no small part to the reputation he had built as one of the world's finest drummers) was more deserving of its own separate acknowledgement, rather than giving it second billing to your concussion and subsequent recovery. Not to sound disrespectful about your plight, Tim, but concussions, injuries and illnesses occur all the time. Relationships spanning the bulk of two decades do not. And while you did provide some complimentary words towards Dan (although very few), perhaps it wasn't the best option to start with "He sucked" in reference to his audition for the band. And even though you admitted that you've told the story before, you felt it necessary to remind us that you were responsible for his growth as a drummer by giving him a chance initially, bringing the focus back to you. This is quite disrespectful to him as you're suggesting he didn't have the tenacity, ambition or drive to succeed without you. How would you know? He may have gone onto scale even greater heights if he didn't land this gig. But he played his arse off and committed to the band, giving up a very lucrative career outside of music. That too should've been acknowledged, but wasn't. Perhaps you're actually still upset about his departure. Or perhaps there's a whole lot more to the story than you're letting on. We don't need to know the sordid details if things were less than amicable between you. But surely the announcement about him leaving this amazing band - which I believe has been elevated as a direct result of Dan's contributions - warranted something much greater than this rather clinical update that was more akin to corporate or political spin. Very disappointing.

Hey BK, thanks for the taking the time to share your thoughts. I can appreciate that everyone responds to such news in very different ways. My post today was shared under the presumption that most people would already know the news of Dan leaving and would have read the statements from Dan and the band about this. In hindsight I can that for anyone finding out the news this way it may not seem appropriate. This is not how the announcement was supposed to be done. It was supposed to be done officially here on Patreon first, but that didn't happen and was out of our control. I don't feel my comments about Dan's rise as a drummer gave any credit to us beyond that we gave him a chance. Dan is an incredibly dedicated person that practiced his arse off for years and that is why he is so highly regarded as one of the best metal drummers in the world. He earned that through years of dedication. I mention that story about the audition because I feel it's such a great illustration of how incredibly far Dan has come. Dan joined a band where every member had many years experience on their instrument and were already relatively accomplished. Dan had only started playing less than a year earlier, so his playing with just in his infancy. All the credit for the subsequent journey he went on from there should and does go to him and has never been said otherwise. ---- But one thing you are onto that I want to acknowledge is that bands are kind of like a marriage and any time there is a break up within that it is never 100% positive vibes. Even the most amicable of break ups between members/bands is going to have mixed feelings just like it's incredibly rare for a divorce to happen with zero challenging emotions mixed in. Many bands don't talk about this sort of thing at all beyond the official statement released as it can be quite a sensitive thing, but we always try and be as open as we can with you guys. Today I wanted to try and do something simply to acknowledge Dan's departure here on Patreon seeing we hadn't mentioned it yet due to me being on sick leave. I also wanted to add at the end something positive about the record seeing I know this news would be upsetting for many people so you know it's not all bad within NeO at the moment. I'm simply doing my best here to try and balance offering an update to you guys whilst also balancing my own recovery and also my own mixed feelings about all of this. I appreciate that you felt this message missed the mark and I'll take that on board. - Tim

Sad day for NeO, but many happier days to come! Any thinking if you'll do open auditions or approach drummers in private?

I feel I should chime in also. BK, I’ll have to respectfully disagree to Dan leaving being “second billing”, sorry if what Tim said came across to you like that but it’s certainly not how I see it. The whole “he sucked” reference is something Dan has said himself on many occasions publicly, it’s more of an amusing comparison to where he is now as Tim has said (call it somewhat of an in-joke made public)- if he wasn’t up to the task then we wouldn’t have chosen him to be a part of NeO. All members have come a long way and all members have made the band what it is, we are a collective sound. One member doesn’t make the band nor do they break it. Tim isn’t being disrespectful towards Dan at all. Perhaps the impression you have to Tim seeming “clinical” (in my opinion doesn’t) is because we’ve dealt with the loss for longer and this is not exactly new for us. Also, not sure if you’re aware but it’s not the first time Dan has quit, when Portal of I was released he left for about a year and wanted to come back. Doesn’t change the loss but thought it worth pointing out that we’ve been through it before. Cheers, - Xen

We’re yet to decide exactly how things will go as priority is getting the album mixed currently. We’ll update

Dan leaving definitely is sad news, but I too feel the opportunity this gives for NeO as well as Dan! I‘ll be looking forward to new things in NeO as well as Dan‘s solo stuff in the future! I hope all band members can leave the sad part behind and stay in contact! @Tim I hope your recovery is going well! I was glad to hear that another band member has produced something so you can take a well deserved and well needed rest! I cannot wait for more news about the upcoming album and hope you still will release that recorded Melbourne show as well! It would be a nice way to close this era of NeO.

Ne Obliviscaris

Hey Sven, thanks for the supportive comments. Yes I agree on the latter comment. We'll be organising that for this year sometime soon also!

You never know when a change may be for the better.  It is a law of life -and of Physics- resistance to change, but who knows, because facing them implies evolving.  Who knows if in a few years we see that the delay in the release of the new album, a basic pillar like Dan leaving the group or a pandemic, were in some way positive things. I would like to highlight Xen words, Neo as a concept even beyond each of the boys separately. P.S. For more or less a month, Neo did not appear on Dan's social media profile, nor did Dan on NeO's.  At home we already expected something like this. Sad, but waiting to see what this new stage brings. Said that, please, guys, get on the stick, we want to listen to new album sooner than later 😁

Tina

Oh wow. And I thought *I* was a little pissed. But your point of view is very one sided and biased and insensitive. Did you consider that Dan could have waited a few more days to announce his departure and give the rest of the band a chance to prepare a statement, while he was fully aware that Tim was in hospital? Or that Dan himself could have made a statement on Patreon to express his appreciation for the most loyal fanbase?

George Quiriconi

Sad news to say the least. I met Dan a couple of times when NEO was on tour in the states and got to talk to him about his sticking technique and was nice enough to talk shop with another drummer. A true test for whoever is the new drummer if they can play Plagues almost as well as Dan, it is you know your Freebird song. Anyways I commented on a video Tim did a few weeks about NEO’s first US tour. Hope the rest of the band got to read it. The one off show in Indianapolis, Indiana where you headlined and very few people where there but a great show and the band played and smiled all the way through. That to me drives the point on how much NEO loves to play in front of people no matter how many people are there. Thanks and hopefully the new album will be out soon.

Dina

It is really sad, but as you said also a new opportunity for NeO. I'm sure you will find someone awesome, just like you did with Martino! And if Dan wasn't in it with all his heart anymore, it's definitely best to move on and look for a new drummer who feels passionate about the band again. I wish Dan much success for his future endeavours and I can't wait to hear him and you on the new album, which surely will blow everyone away!

Niklas Pettersson

I wish all the best to Dan - his drumming has been and remains such a pillar for the band to date! Rock on, mate! Wish you all the best for the future, and look forward to seeing what you’ll develop into next. Thanks to the rest of NeO for having created a new album and endured through this pandemic era which hopefully will be able to come to some kind of end soon - many other European bands are able to tour in North America now again and can’t wait to see NeO soon again!! Absolutely pumped for it For the band as a whole, all I can say is - “the only thing that is constant is change”. For any change in life, be it in personal relations, work change - anything - “Tuckman’s stages of group development” applies really nicely. Look it up, always helps to know what to expect to happen next

Well this is quite a bombshell (for me at least). While it’s devastating to see Dan leave, you all have to do what is best for yourselves and what is best for the band. If something is no longer working out, there’s no point trying to force it. I have always thought that Ne Obliviscaris is the sum of six incredibly talented musicians, and I have no doubt that the new drummer will be equally as talented. I wish Dan all the luck in the world with his new projects and I can’t wait to hear his work on the upcoming album. Much love to you all.
