Very glad to hear you're looking forward to coming back to Montreal - our metal scene is indeed pretty vibrant, I'll be at the show in November and can't wait to see you guys live. On a semi-related topic, and inspired by your discussion of violin in extreme metal bands, have you ever heard UneXpect? They've been disbanded for years now unfortunately but they were an avant-garde extreme metal band from Montreal who also featured violin in their music. If you haven't heard them, I'd strongly recommend their last two releases, "In a Flesh Aquarium" and "Fables of the Sleepless Empire", their sound is very eclectic and even less approachable to most people than NeO but very interesting and innovative!

Yes Montreal is amazing! And yes Unexpect were in those early days of NeO one of the only bands I knew of that had a violinist. Very interesting stuff! - Tim

Cool! I figured you guys might have known of/been influenced by them since In a Flesh Aquarium came out in 2006 and they had an album and EP and an underground following prior to that. Do you know if Xen knew of them as well and perhaps got the idea to recruit a violinist from them, or if not what prompted him to look for a strings player for the band?
