I just wrapped up a long ongoing commission with Ozawk (teh popular griffon/dragon/vulture character) and I had pressure on myself to make it particularly good since they get lots of work from lots of amazing artists. I do try to make every single picture I do my new best one though, don't worry. ^.~

The idea was "hot dogging" and I kind of had a rough time trying to figure out how to make that work while not showing too much of another character. This sketch sheet shows the process I have of sorting roughs, elaborating ideas, and detailing sketches.

Wow that's quite alot of sketches! How long did it take you to figure out which one to start working on? I'm guessing the top right was the pick based on the number of sketches? xD

I typically work on sketches til I find an idea I'm happy to recommend to the client (roughs in top left) then if they're good with the idea I carry on detailing the next day (top right). Most of the top right sketches were elaborations of one idea (the rough without a number) but funnily the client said they liked the rough without the number which turned into the left sketch of the bottom section. I felt it was all very stiff and not dynamic so I tried two other ideas and starred which of those three I thought would have better potential. The client liked the left one though I expressed some honest concerns I had and we were happy on the new version of it which I haven't posted but I got a preview of the process after that coming up. ^^ I do work very closely with clients and there's often lots of back and forth, I try to work with the clients idea while also making it the most successful image I can. Sometimes ideas feel impossible to work with as the mind can be very abstract in thinking. And of course the faster I can nail a good sketch the happier I am. o/
