Hi all,

I'll talk about a bit about carryover votes and the poll going with this post. I'll first start by reminding everyone how these work :

In some cases, character poll suggestions can keep some of their votes:

  • 50% if the suggestion places 2nd in a poll,
  • 25% if the suggestion places 3rd in a poll or has been made by a Super Size Tier member.

As long as a suggestion appears in consecutive polls, carryover votes will accumulate poll after poll, and be added as bonus votes when the results are calculated.

Carryover votes were introduced for many reasons:

  • Some suggestions were popular, but not enough to win a poll and as a result often ended up in 2nd or 3rd place for months. They can now win after a few polls.
  • Some suggestions weren't as popular, but there were patrons willing to push them poll after poll until they won. Polls remain a popularity contest, so it still takes time for less popular characters to win, but they now can (and already did).
  • Because there is only a single winner in a poll, all votes but those going to the winner were meaningless, what incentivized tactical voting rather than voting for favorites. Carryover votes counter this by ensuring that a majority of votes can last over more than a single poll.

Of course, carryover votes aren't a perfect mechanic either. Polls can be over before they even began when a suggestion has a massive bonus. They're easier to predict and less exciting in a sense. They're not a single event in time anymore, but something that happens in a flow, implying that a vote can feel pointless at the time it's casted, even if the same vote helps a suggestion win further down the line.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm very satisfied with how carryover votes currently work. They're driving wins, including some of outsider characters, without killing the chances of popular characters. It's why I'm considering to extend them to the sequence, experiment and rework polls. But it's not something I'd do without making sure a significant majority of you agree to it. It's why there is a poll along this post, with this question:

Are you in favor of extending carryover votes to sequence, experiment and rework polls?
