ShadowLand(Commission) (Patreon)

I received a request to create an illustration based on “Shadowland,” Nala’s song from the Broadway musical version of The Lion King. It expresses Nala’s determination and sorrow.

Some of you may wonder why I drew Sarabi looking as if she’s smiling… When I saw The Lion King in the theater before, during the performance of “Shadowland,” the actress playing Sarabi tightly held Nala’s hand and said (or mouthed), “It’s okay. You can do it.” I’m not sure whether it was actual dialogue or just lip-syncing, but that’s how it sounded to me. This illustration captures that moment.
