Hi, lovelies! Over the past month, I've been sharing botanical-related content and have received several requests to create a basic color palette for beginner artists taking their first steps in botanical illustration. While having more colors can make your artwork more varied and interesting, selecting the right colors can be a challenging decision for beginners, especially when using markers which don't allow for mixing colors like watercolors or gouache.

To get started, it's helpful to have at least 2-3 tones of the same color to create contrast and show volume and textures in your artwork. You can even mix markers from different brands to achieve the desired effect. Common colors used in botanical illustration include shades of green for leaves and stems, shades of red, pink, and yellow for flowers and fruits, and browns for tree trunks and branches. Green is particularly popular among botanical illustrators, so try to have at least two different tones of green in your palette, such as a yellow-green for young leaves and grass, and a dark-cold tone for shadows.

I've prepared a basic color palette that should cover most of the flowers and greenery you wish to draw. Of course, if you want to draw complex flowers, you may need to add more colors to your palette. Don't be afraid to experiment and slowly add new colors to your collection to enhance your artwork.

I hope this post helps you find the right colors for your next botanical illustration. Let me know if you have any questions or comments🍃 😊
