Hey everyone! So there’s some important things about my comic, Overkill, that I need to discuss.

Patreon has been cracking down on the issue of consent in fictional works and their recent policy update meeting has me thinking more seriously about the future of Overkill.

While Overkill is kinda rough and edgy, consent is always present when it comes to the sex scenes. The characters might not always provide a consent form read, signed & sealed with blood but they are all willing, horny nasty little raider mutant guys even though it might be a little dubious at times. Unfortunately, any level of dubiousness is a risk when it comes to Patreon.

Here’s Patreon’s guidelines regarding consent:

“It is paramount that Adult/18+ creators demonstrate consent in all works (real or animated; photo, video, written, audio) between adult participants or characters; specifically, a freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous indication of consent by a statement or by a clear affirmative action. Additionally, participants and characters must be able to give consent (i.e. not be under the influence of alcohol, drugs, hypnosis, blackmail). “Consensual non-consent” works, in which participants or characters engage in simulated non-consensual encounters, are not permitted. Accompanying a work that features a non-consensual encounter with a statement claiming that the encounter was consensual is a violation of Patreon guidelines.”

Idk, maybe a consent form, read, signed and sealed with blood by every fictional character in this story might be a good idea! (Haha, wait, this actually happened in Gomorrah once)

Jokes aside, even “accompanying a work with a statement claiming consent” is against the rules if the sex acts are still in violation.

Overkill is based in a harsh, post apocalyptic world where no one wants to play nice. We’ve got bioengineered mutant killing machines and a reckless gang of raiders. Part of Rocksalt’s story is that his raider gang treats him like shit to the point that he’s had enough. He’s also a hoe and will fuck every single one of them on his way out. While some scenes may appear dubious at times, I do my best to write these scenarios with the characters expressing they’re into it in some way. But, I do realize that my intentions mean nothing if something is perceived as an absolute violation by Patreon in any way.

So, I want to play it safe. Patreon is a huge source of income for me and I’d rather not play with fire. Having to make changes to ensure my work is more aligned with the rules is way less of a headache than losing it all if I misstep.

I’m putting Overkill on pause for the rest of December and January. I’ll be taking this time to rewrite the story and make a fresh start in February. I’m already rewriting the plot and I’ve tightened up some lore. I’ve adjusted the character dynamics significantly and I think this new version will be a lot of fun! (Rocksalt actually LIKES his gang in this version, wOAH;;;; and the members are gonna have names!!) Honestly, I think the most effective change I can make is to switch up the character dynamics enough so that there’s no room to wonder if something is consensual. Rocksalt, the four armed mutant, the creepy mutant with the eyes, the raider gang, they'll still be there! The apocalyptic world remains the same.

I really just want this to be fun and I’m taking this chance to make it even better than the first version! I’m sorry if this change feels sudden but I hope those of you who read Overkill will feel as excited as I am for a new start.

TLDR: Patreon’s guidelines regarding consent in fictional sexual scenarios is making me anxious about the future of Overkill so I’m pausing the comic for the rest of Dec-Jan to rewrite everything to be less dubious and I aim to re-launch the new version of the comic in Feb.

---

Also! A side note for another important topic that I will discuss more thoroughly in January - tier levels! I have plans to update the $5 Cryptid and $7 Beast tiers in February and my goal is to basically combine the two tiers into one $6 tier to simplify accessibility to all my comics. I’ll speak more on that in January!

Here's some Rocksalt concept sketchies~

I'm really very tired of these apps making it difficult for creators to convey their stories as they were intended. I understand that consent is important, however, these are fictional characters. No crimes are being committed because none of it is real. These companies should stop worrying so much about their optics and worry more about how they treat their employees and users.

I can't be mad at you protecting your bag. Censorship still sucks but I respect your hustle. You and Mars do so much work for us. Thank you and I can't wait to see where it goes in the future.

Appreciate the advance notice, and given the policy entirely understandable. Patreon’s approach is kind of understandable in the context of a broader crackdown on non-consensual media and they’d need to employ humans to make the determination between animated and ‘real’ imagery. I get where they’re coming from but the implementation is poor and broader than really needed as a result.

😭😭😭😭 But do what you gotta do.

Reminds me of when seatbelt use in cars had to be specifically shown on American TV. But we all got over it. And starting buckling up for real.

Exactly fcking this!!!! These are all fictional characters and stories.

Thank you for letting us know. This sucks so hard, but we’re all keen to see the new story. I just hate how “conservative” and policed our works are now. I basically couldn’t post anymore on patreon because every single one of my stories were dubcon and now I just don’t have a patreon anymore. I swear it’s getting harder and harder for NSFW artists to thrive in this day and age

I fucking hate Puritan panic and all forms of censorship and thought control.
