You may have noticed a lot of recent discussion about a new anti-abortion law in Texas. Known as the “Texas Heartbeat Bill”, the bill creates a labyrinth of limitations and requirements surrounding patients’ procurement of abortions and doctors’ administration of abortion procedures for Texas residents.   With all of the controversy, it can be hard to understand what’s really going on. So here is my best attempt at fairly explaining the current status of the Texas Heartbeat Bill.

So if the absolute max damages per person involved is 10000$ per incident, then would it be possible for the abortion clinic to just hire 2 lawyers and sue itself in court to exhaust the remedies of anyone else coming after them, and then give themselves the damages? Seems like 2 lawyers filing the absolute minimum amount of paperwork would be cheaper than paying random third parties the full damages amount every time you got sued.

Appreciate your doing this.

I think it's ten thousand dollars per lawsuit, as in, each person who sues the "abettor" to "enforce" this disgusting violation of the human and constitutional rights of women as equal citizens. This thing is designed to force secrecy and pretense, because the nuts can sue anybody into oblivion-- even falsely accused defendants can't get their court costs back from the false accusers. Everyone will have to hide everything having to do with pregnancy UNLESS they are forced-birth Gideonites-- what if the sour-faced virago who rings up your purchases at the drugstore keeps track of everyone who buys a pregnancy test? Unless you know you're going to carry to term, you'd better hide even the possibility you might ever have become pregnant! We've turned the clock back to when Sanger and Goldman did jail time for TELLING women about contraception.

so if, hypothetically, I were to tell someone who is unwillingly pregnant the names of the drugs that make up RU-486 and the proper dosing instructions (as per the Planned Parenthood information sheet)... will I end up sued and and screaming for the ACLU to help me vindicate my free speech rights? Or will it be just fine for the reactionary grifters to penalize my speech via punitive lawsuit??
