Hi everyone,

well, it's official. Summer In The City has been rejected by Steam and the store page has been removed, six days before launch, ten months after the store page went up, gathering 4000 wishlists. There were absolutely no indications beforehand that this would happen, despite being in contact with Steamworks' support team prior to this unfortunate decision. I am devastated, angry and in utter shock. This is one of these classic "worst case scenarios" people refer to.

Summer In The City's development will not end. But this new situation certainly makes it much, much harder to get by. I am now forced to check every avenue available to me, from seeking other storefronts to looking for a part-time job to keep me above water. I am eternally grateful for all of my and Summer's generous and amazing supporters. Without you, this project would be dead in the waters by now after having also lost roughly 40% of my monthly income due to the horrendous delisting situation on itch. Crazy times we live in.

It's a bad day, not gonna lie. A very bad one. But our Pumpkin will prevail!

I may have to postpone the release of version 1.0 for a few days, I'm not sure yet. It's basically finished but there are still a few things left to do over the next week. I will share my decision this upcoming Monday, August 25th. There are quite a few other things I also have to take care of now, which haven't been part of my schedule before the rejection. I apologize in advance should a delay become inevitable. Won't be long though.

Members who follow me for a while now know that I really, really don't like asking for financial support for myself. I want people to make contributions on their own terms by deeming my project worthy. But this is an out-of-the-ordinary situation, so I will swallow my pride today and ask you for your support for the time being. I'm well aware of the fact that times are tough for many people right now, so I don't expect much from it and totally understand. But if you can afford a buck or two without having to worry about an empty fridge at the end of the month, I'd appreciate it big time.

Again, a big fat hug for all supporters! Much love! I need a drink today. Drink responsibly!

Something is seriously wrong with STEAM. The "wish list" has been unavailable for about a day and a half, and I doubt it's a technical problem because everything else is working. It seems very likely that something similar to what happened with itch is going on. I would say that I am raising my sponsorship category one level higher, but the difference between the two levels is too great, and at the moment I cannot afford such a large increase. Unfortunately, I am at the point where I will have to discontinue some sponsorships within weeks. Have you checked out GoG yet?

I'm finding this whole issue ... baffling. I saw the announcements and reaction to Steam's and Itch's decision to bow down to Visa and Mastercard (and I do understand the financial imperatives that elicit that reaction) but your note here is ... frightening. One dev on Steam posted recently that his game had been rejected because the story lacked artistic merit. What?? Who gets to decide whether a story has artistic merit? A bunch of grey suits in a high-rise office? Do the Emanuel stories have artistic value? I would say not but then who am I to judge? The Story of O? Fifty Shades of Grey? The Mandingo stories? Damn it! My mother used to read them and they are frighteningly awful. Yes. I did read them. I was a curious teenager. As bad, in their own way, as the Sven Hassel books. These are the same cretins who rewrote and re-illustrated the Enid Blyton books :-D Under UK legislation, the only material that falls under the Obscene Publications Act is storylines that involve acts that are illegal in the UK (bestiality, rape, necrophilia, etc.). Anything else involving consent from both parties is completely outwith the scope of the Act. I can't help feel that the tail is wagging the dog here. The lunatics are taking over the asylum.

That’s not cool what they just did to you steam be doing a lot of stuff they been deleting games from the store lately I herd they gonna be deleting adult games from there they wanna make steam safe for kids the game is awesome love the story line good luck with everything sorry that happened to you 😢

Manuel Zaragoza-Linares

There a website Called Oppaiman that is these kinds of games. You can check there.

FlipDaShit

I'm looking into GOG's requirements and process right now as a matter of fact. Sorry to hear you're struggling. I can relate today. Hug! ❤️

FlipDaShit

"Artistic merit"? This doesn't sound right. That would be a whole new level of messed up.

FlipDaShit

SITC is already on there, but I have to admit that I neglected their storefront a bit. Probably gonna have to pay more attention to it now. Anyway, thanks for the tip!

This is an extract from his (Flimsy Legs) post on Steam: "These have been a rough couple of weeks, to say the least. Payment processors are deciding what kind to stories are allowed to be told, essentially choosing what "counts as real art" versus "content with no inherent artistic value". As a result of those tightened rules for adult games, Animus Non Grata was initially flagged for removal and was banned from Steam." Not good. Not good at all. I'm seriously considering closing my Steam account. This is total bullshit. Damn it! Even Elon Musk thinks that this is bullshit.

What the actual fuck. I have no words ... Time to bump up my tier. Summer will not be silenced!

Qaliber

Steam can go suck a fat one!

MadSqu

Another dev mentioned that Oppai demands devs to actively promote their site otherwise they will not be highlighted on the frontpage and stuff like that. Sounded a little like Jehovas Witness stuff. But maybe blown out of proportion as well. No idea. I am really sorry to read that. GOG.com has also a NSFW section. All in all the situation really sucks. Hopefully in half a year everything is back to normal.

FlipDaShit

Thank you, Alex! ❤️Summer will not only not be silenced, she's ready to Fus Ro Dah the shit out of it!

It’s really such an unfortunate situation… Honestly, I first discovered this game last winter on Steam’s store page, and I had been looking forward to its release ever since. I even kept my wishlist sorted by release date so I wouldn’t miss it. But with all the recent controversies on Steam, I’ve been very worried. Games I liked have been removed, and more and more have been rejected right before release. In just one week, two games—including this one—were rejected. Because of that, it’s become a habit for me to check whether the games on my wishlist have been removed, and unfortunately, I found out this one was deleted from the store just five minutes after it happened. All we can really do is support with a few dollars of donations. I was hoping it could release on Steam so that more people could play it. I don’t know if you’ve heard, but there’s an AVN called Kate that is being sold on Steam under the title Fresh Story. I’m not 100% sure, but I heard that it was initially rejected, and then later passed review after the developer changed the title and the main character’s name, removed only the problematic scenes, and swapped out the assets for characters who looked too young (infrequent appearances). Of course, since English isn’t my native language, I can’t be completely certain I understood it correctly… but I really hope there’s another way forward. As you know, this game didn’t actually break any of Steam’s rules. I had been counting down the days until August 29th (August 30th in my country’s time), and it’s so disappointing and sad. I don’t want to say ‘stay strong’ to someone who’s going through a hard time, but I sincerely hope everything works out. I hope that, just as much as you’re struggling now, something good comes your way very soon. Please take care of yourself, my friend.

This is really bad news. But can you be a bit more specific....why did Steam reject the game? It is hard to believe....

Colin Elliott

Steam’s review process is a joke, they have no consistency and there’s one person notorious for rejecting anything adult but they have zero appeal process either

Charles Manuel Pimentel

I know I'm but a lurker, a free version downloader, a ship passing in the night, but I would urge you to take heed of GOG and, possibly, Saikey Studios' storefront, as they are of late taking in a lot of Itch & Steam refugees, of in process of so doing. You WILL prevail, never forget that.

Right now I have two holes in my Steam wishlist where "This item is no longer available." One was cancelled because it was "using AI assets based on real people" even though that was not the case. Those are going to stay there as long as I have a Steam account because really, the decisions have made no sense. I am strongly tempted to wishlist every upcoming adult game just to see how many get binned by their review team. The problem is that, as a business, Steam has the right to determine what they will sell on their site; forcing someone to carry a product they no longer wish to sell is as anathema as the censorship that is leading them to pull games. Yet they don't want to shut down revenue streams, so they let the games be listed and promoted, driving traffic, but get cold feet and yank titles if the reviewer feels a whiff of concern, or animus, or a quirky decision process. And since that review process takes time, and money, there is no appeal process, as that would add to what they likely feel is a process that already costs them too much to prevent them from being hoisted on other compliance issues. Really, they have put themselves in a no-win situation. They need revenue to support their platform, and everything that has launched over the years, regardless of its financial viability for them. To get revenue, they have widened and minimized the acceptance process (remember when the community had to vote on games that would get accepted, then early access?). Now they sit with 10s and 100s of thousands of drek games on their servers just to get a little juice from their possible sales, while the big money makers could bolt if they feel jittery about the platform, so they have to stop and look at the relatively niche market of adult games and spend just enough to make sure they don't get tarred by reactionary twits but not so much as to lose that additional support of revenue. Full Disclosure: My day job has been working in the intersection of fraud, compliance, and technical issues for many, many years. This kind of situation is my wheelhouse.

sophy

Bumped my tier! I am SO sorry about this! All your hard work never goes unnoticed!!

This is the second game on my wishlist that Steam has rejected last minute. While I don't agree with it, in the case of the other one, I wasn't surprised, based on certain content in that game. But this one baffles me completely. There was none of that content in your game. I guess we should be grateful to Steam for protecting us from ourselves. After all, adults can't be trusted to make decisions for themselves about what content they wish to see. I had been skating by on a free membership, since I was purchasing the game on Steam. But now that that is no longer an option, I have become a paid member.

Boundaries of Morality ?

rusty

Mary... At least as far as I know, every single game that has been rejected for release on Steam so far had her as the reviewer.

gamecerevie

That's was my reference.

Dehlaz

I must say I'm surprised by this move, while Summer in the City is certainly pretty fetish-heavy I don't think it's out of line compared to other games currently available on Steam (or in early access on Steam, or still coming to Steam). This must be some sort of brainless reaction to the recent dust-up with the banks and payment processors. My condolences on the rejection.

Wei Liu

Sorry to hear this. I thought only government employees that are not very bright or have a sharp mind are robotic and would mindlessly follow pre-programed guidelines. I guess the private sector (Steam) is not different. The rejection was unreasonable because this AVN has adult themes, but promotes healthy female-female relationships, none of the themes recently getting games banned left and right. From some of the comments, I think its because some of the characters like Summer and maybe especially Lilly do not look "adult" enough, though their ages are stated. 🙄🙄🙄 Its like my job all the time, some dumb gov employees see something not complying, reject it, even though our firm knew it was an exceptional case or outlier and put an explanation to explain why its not DONE the usual way. But they DONT care sometimes, just not comply, REJECT. Same with these Steam employees, just follow guidelines rigidly without thinking about special context or circumstances or outside the box. World's full of these morons and whatever: is what it is. Hope your game gets a home on GOG. I voted for it.

FlipDaShit

Thanks for making me aware of Saikey Studios. Looking into it.

FlipDaShit

Thank you so much! It's certainly great to know that people take notice of your work. ❤️

FlipDaShit

Thanks for your support and voting on GOG. Would be cool indeed to finally find a suitable home for Summer. ❤️

Charles Manuel Pimentel

A true pleasure and no thanks necessary! I hope they take you in with open arms and hearts ❤️. Do let us know how things proceed over with them and GOG. I'm certain there are other, more EU oriented sites I'm forgetting... If I recall them I'll also duly spread word. Good fortune!

Wei Liu

Wow. Worse than even government Court systems, which has levels of appeal if you get a bad judge. Steam is way worse, I see.
