1808 Mystery Eruption Source Found? (Patreon)
Content
In the the last 10,000 years, numerous large volcanic eruptions have occurred on the planet. Tambora in 1815, Rinjani in 1257, Crater Lake in 5680 BC. However, three large eruptions have been documented via ice cores but their sources have been a mystery.
When did they occur?
535 AD; VEI 7 (likely the first Krakatoa caldera collapse)
1465 AD; VEI 7
1808 AD; VEI 6-7.
Well, I may have found the volcano responsible for the 1808 eruption. This volcano is located near Tonga, and has a 7 x 4.5 km wide caldera. It is believed that much of this caldera formed in the last 200 years due to levels of erosion and hydrothermal activity. The volcano in question is unnamed, and located at 21.15 S, 175.75 W.
I’d throw a margin of error of about 100 years for its age, so it likely formed between 1720 and 1920.
Based on the caldera size, the eruption likely threw up a tephra mass of 30-50 km^3, indicating a Krakatoa sized eruption. Of course, this is based on very limited evidence. With that being said, it’s very interesting 😀. I might make a more detailed video on this topic. #volcano #mysteryeruption #caldera #geology
