Banded iron formations are a unique geologic feature that formed mostly between 1.8 to 2.5 billion years ago. The alternating colors represent red rich chert/jaspilite and black hematite + magnetite. These largely formed when oxygen first began appearing on the planet en mass, which caused iron deposits to oxidize and leach into the sea, temporarily turning the sea red. The vast majority of the world's iron is produced from deposits with features like these; in Western Australia they are quite common!

First introduced to what banded iron was in the UP of Michigan as a teen. Was up camping and hunting with my dad near Jaspers Knob. Told me what they were and mentioned they were incredibly old rock formations.
