A9III Dynamic Range vs A1 Dynamic Range (Patreon)
Content
Photons to Photos have released their independent findings for the dynamic range of the A9III
When the A9III was first announced many reviewers reported that Sony's use of its ground-breaking Global Shutter Sensor would inevitably lead to lower dynamic range than Sony's other Full Frame Alpha cameras. My own tests with the A9III camera found the dynamic range of the A9III is more than up to the task of capturing bright sunlit highlights and dark tones in the shade with full detail.
Although technically the other Alpha cameras do have a higher dynamic range at ISO 100, many sports photographers, needing to freeze fast-moving action, are likely to be using ISO values higher than 200 in most situations (the base level ISO of the A9III). The exceptions to this are motorsports photographers who regularly use slow shutter speeds (and low ISO values) to create motion blur behind the subject they are tracking or sports photographers who can shoot with wide aperture primes.
