Sony decided on an announcement shrouded in secrecy for this, their third version of their 'collectable classic', the RX1R full-frame compact camera. Most reviewers have been asked to wait to get their hands on an RX1R III camera - hence the reason for this preview video rather than a full review video (which will follow later).
Many photographers, however, are eager to know whether the upgraded features are enough of an incentive to purchase this camera, while many other photographers will just be curious as to why anyone in their right mind would pay the asking price, for what is essentially a compact camera (even if it is the lightest full-frame camera ever made that incorporates a viewfinder).
Sony have added their 'state-of-the-art' AF systems to this RX1R III version, while retaining the much-loved Zeiss 35mm F2 Sonnar lens with leaf shutter. In this video I take a look at Sony's competition and just share some thoughts about the relative merits and concept of owning a fixed-lens full-frame compact camera.
I think the RX1R III will undoubtedly become a collectable classic, even if the camera is not a huge sales-success for Sony, so expect the second-hand values to remain high for the decade to come (just as it has been for the RX1R II). Sometimes cameras, like red wine, improve with age.
