I won't be reviewing this camera as I have no interest in walking with a camera with the lens pointed the wrong way;-) There are probably a dozen movies out there that review this camera but I had to watch three until someone (Ted Forbes) pointed out what the two custom buttons do and that I was interested in hearing about. The bokeh button and the product showcase button are showcased if you skip to the 7-minute mark in the movie.

I will personally stick to using my RX100 VII for all the reasons I have showcased in my RX100VII review.

I am happy to answer any questions you may have about this product (I have an opinion even though I am not going to review the camera personally - I turned down the opportunity to review this camera a month ago as I don't review gear I am not wanting to add to my camera bag)

If you want a lot more technical details about this camera (minus the two custom keys) I would recommend the review by Gerald Undone. He doesn't grandstand and speaks a lot faster than I can think.

Sony ZV-1 Hands On :: They Got It Right!!!

The new Sony ZV-1 is a compact camera with an emphasis on video, vlogging and content production. In many ways its similar to the RX100 lineup of cameras, the biggest physical differences being a fully articulating, flip screen and a newly designed, 3 capsule microphone. There are 2 new modes for quick settings, the "Bokeh" switch and the "Product Showcase Setting". Pressing the Bokeh switch will adjust automatic settings to accommodate full aperture and it will toggle between that and "clear" mode which will be stopped down. Product Showcase is a mode that will adjust the autofocus settings to sense something you might hold up in the frame (such as a product review) and move the focus accordingly. You also get advanced video functions such as the neutral density filter, Picture Profiles (S-Log2, S-Log3, Cine1, Cine2, HLG, HLG1, HLG2 and HLG3), and Gamma Display Assist. Also interesting is this is a very capable stills camera - pretty much up to date with all of the current Sony features. It is a dual-stacked, Sony Exmor-RS sensor so you get 24fps burst shooting as well as object tracking at 20 megapixels. You don't have the optical view finder of course or any control ring on the lens, but stills functionality is excellent as you would expect on this camera as well. One thing that a “YouTube couple” demonstrated as a problem is that the autofocus seems to hunt back and forth if there are multiple faces in the frame. That surprised me, I thought Sony pretty much nailed focusing on faces.

That would be user error from someone unfamiliar with Sony systems - so they blamed the camera rather than their own ignorance. Someone who knows the Sony systems would know what to do in this instance. I have asked Sony many times to restrict the individuals who review their cameras on their level of expertise rather than the number of followers they have. Even highly experienced reviewers make some classic errors when working with Sony systems. Matt Granger with half a million followers complained the AF on the A6400 was not very good. It took a fellow reviewer to comment that he had the camera on AF-A instead of AF-C (his mistake was clearly visible on his external recording device). Tony Northrup with over a million subscribers is convinced Sony cameras cannot achieve 10 or 11 frames per second because he has not realised that changing Priority Set in AF-C to AF (something he always does on the the Sony Cameras) slows the drive mode down.

I noticed in DPreviews video that the stabilization was not great when it was turned to standard. Curious your thoughts? Here is the video. https://youtu.be/d0hsZ_sLOvM

Stabilisation in Standard Mode can only use lens stabilisation (OSS) as there is no Sensor Stabilisation (IBIS) in these little cameras. The advanced stabilisation is firmware driven (hence the crop) it works a little bit like Warp Stabilisation in Adobe Premiere. The Standard stabilisation is fine for stills but vloggers feel compelled to walk with these cameras while recording. Even the lens stabilisation and IBIS cannot compete with a good gimbal or this firmware stabilisation which is pretty smooth.
