I have converted a dozen .ARW files to .DNG files in a pre-release version of Lightroom.

You can download them and view them in your own Adobe software by clicking on this link:

Thanks Mark. What is your analysis? And I guess the next question is how do they compare to images under the same or similar conditions with the a7R iv or a9 II? Also, in your workflow, do you routinely convert to dng? It was helpful here as I could see your processing adjustments.

Thanks for posting these raw images Mark! I pulled down a mixture of them and I’m pleased with what I’m seeing overall. The noise level and dynamic range is superb with either lens mounted. It’s readily apparent that the noise level performance is better than the A7Riv at ISO’s above 2000. Of course the sharpness is better with the GM lens vs the cropped sensor lens you were using but it still was acceptable as long as the cropping wasn’t overly aggressive. I do think that the A1 was built with the fast GM’s being the intended glass and why wouldn’t it be. I like others are looking forward to seeing how the 100-400 GM performs on the A1, it performs very well with the A9ii so it’s probably a foregone conclusion. Couple questions, did Adobe drop a hint about when the update to LR would be released? What are your observations related to these raw images?

Downloaded these for a play, Mark. Awesome.

I think the files are representative of what I am seeing and consistent with what I would expect of image quality from an R camera with the tracking capability of an Alpha 9. The APS-C kite boarding files could be a little sharper but the presence of large amounts of salt spray could have stolen away some of the finer details. Yes I routinely convert my rated files to DNG and then back these up to the Adobe Creative Cloud by importing them into Lightroom CC (not Classic) but do not convert on import when working with sports action sequences.

As I mentioned in the response to Craig above I am happy with the IQ and tracking. The APS-C images are OK but I have seen sharper when using the E 70-350 lens on the A9II. The presence of large amounts of salt spray could have been responsible for the differences I am seeing here. The review is still 'work in progress' so I won't come to final conclusions until I have more shoots under my belt. This is, of course, all work I should have been doing leading up to the announcement of the camera so I could be a lot clearer about my impressions of the camera. Adobe's won't release their update until the 500+ beta testers are reporting no bugs. Adobe is currently working with Apple's new M1 chip which will undoubtedly be giving them some headaches. I would expect to see the camera supported by the time most photographers are getting their cameras in early March. There is always the occasional time when a new camera's Raw files are not supported and I usually get to hear about it because someone has shot a commercial job and can't access the files - hard to believe someone would shoot a commercial job without testing a new camera but it is not uncommon.
