Re your point about eye AF using spot af picking up eyes that are outside of focal point at 41 minutes. My A7r4 still requires use of the eye AF custom button to pick up eyes in this mode. Is this something likely to be addressed by a firmware upgrade? My camera is on version 1.2 which is the latest I believe.

Mark Galer

That is the correct procedure for Alpha cameras released in 2019 and early 2020. If I was in charge of the Firmware updates, conformity across all Alpha models is something I would address. Unfortunately I am not, and Sony have not released a roadmap of firmware updates since 2019.

Monica

Does the Sony a7c have this revised eye af behavior, where it doesn’t matter what focus area you have chosen?

Monica

Anywhere in the frame? The manual says “inside or around.” the focus area, which is ambiguous

Mark Galer

Anywhere the frame except the extreme edges (where the PDAF points do not extend). You can test this just using a family photo in a frame and watch what happens.

Wonderful and thought provoking Seminar video. I need to change the way I look at light (and people/subjects). You are giving me new perspectives that match my real world. Please continue to give more perspectives with your how & why so I can select the right gear with the right settings to get what I see in my mind. Thanks

Thanks for more great information and sharing your experience! i understand at an event you tell people you are documenting an event. Do they ask you who will see the photos, who you are working for? How do you explain to people why you are photographing them when it is not an event? I know I would get a lot of questions, people are skeptical. Also, I would like to know more about how you direct them with expression, what do you tell them to do? Thanks!!

Mark, not sure if heard the latest "fake news," but Tony said in his latest video that you cannot update Sony Alpha camera firmware updates on Mac computers. Unreal! That's 100% false.

Amor

Tony is a Canon ambassador so he can bad-comment anytime he can

Mark Galer

What often happens with the firmware updates is that they have to be made available for all different operating systems. It is common for companies to lag behind Apple and Microsoft so sometimes you may have to wait for Sony to release a version with the latest OS. This has been the case for decades so is nothing new. I have always been slow to update to the current firmware to ensure I am not inconvenienced. I am running Big Sur on my desktop computer and Catalina on my MacBook Pro - I have been successfully doing firmware updates via my laptop.

I am not sure why reviewers who have heaps of subscribers feel the needs to continue to create sensationalist 'clickbait' headlines. I am surprised that people stay subscribed rather than looking for reviewers with better quality information. While reviewers have heaps of subscribers the camera manufacturers will continue to treat them like royalty.

Very well done Mark! As a new member of this group as well as a new Sony user (switching from Nikon after more than 50 years) to the a1, I need all the help I can get...which you greatly provide. I spent considerable time setting up the camera to match yours and will now use your camset just to see how that works. I am truly amazed with the a1 and look forward to a delightful learning adventure!

Mark Galer

Thanks for the positive feedback and your background information. I used Nikon’s for 32 years before making the move to Sony. I have never regretted the move so hopefully your transition to Sony will be reasonably smooth.

Hello Mark - two things I quickly like to mention - in regards to the a1 viewfinder issue according to Sony Pro Support Sony Japan says that the viewfinder is working as it is supposed to work - I really hope enough people will be complaining otherwise I'm not sure whether Sony will issue a fix. I'm assuming that you have installed the latest firmware for the a1 - I got the impression that I miss a lot more shots than before the upgrade - many pictures are out of focus all the sudden - are you experiencing something similar - I don't see that I do something wrong all the sudden.

Mark Galer

I have only just received my own A1 after returning the pre-production unit I used for the review. I updated to the current firmware yesterday and won't be shooting for a day or two. I would be surprised if the AF performance was in any way impacted by the firmware update but will prioritise and action shoot just to make sure. Anybody who picks up the phone at Sony will be very unlikely to be a photographer or have much photographic experience beyond keen amateur/enthusiast level. Most will not have or have used the A1 yet. The staff will be advised how to respond to callers in very standard ways. Until Sony Japan issues a statement that addresses this issue, Sony staff will not respond any differently. The standard response will be that the issue is mentioned in the user manual so this is standard operating behaviour. I am talking through the problem with the senior product specials here in Australia who will relay then this info to his line manager in Singapore who will relay it to their line manager in Japan. Japan rarely respond, but one can presume they pass the issue to their engineers. We then wait or develop workarounds for the behaviour.

Thank you Mr Mark. It's a piece of excellent and valuable information.
