Please ask your photography questions during the month of September in this forum.

If you have questions that are specific to 'APS-C + A7C' cameras or the Alpha One camera you may choose to use these forums instead.

APS-C & A7C From: https://www.patreon.com/posts/aps-c-a7c-forum-52863184

The Forum Image was captured with the A1 + FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM with my Shoot Mode Dial turned to 2 (Action)> The most difficult thing about this capture was to try not to blink as I waited for the Striated heron to strike ...so I could immediately press the shutter release (Drive Mode set to Hi) - very much a case of you don't know what you have got until it's gone.

I have recently purchased a A7RV sony camera with a 135mm f 1.8 after using a DSLR and I find your tutorials very useful is learning how to operate the camera. I am 77 years of age and have to go to Europe next month. I think the 135mm lens will be a little heavy to be carrying around. Would you be kind enough to suggest a quality lens for travel that is not too heavy.

Hi Stephen - this is the September 2021 Q&A forum. Can you please copy and paste your question into the April 2023 Q&A forum. I'm making my way through your ebook, but in the meantime have a very basic question. I'm shooting the a1, using back button focus. I have the AEL button set as a customized key with registered custom setting for birds in flight, ss 3200. The AF-on button is similarly set up for perched birds, ss1000. I can change the shutter speed with the wheel, but when I then press the AEL button to make the image, of course it reverts to the 3200 ss. I am currently stuck with those two shutter speeds - how do I manually change the shutter speed so that it overrides the custom key? I am also setting up 1, 2, 3 according to your PAL recommendations, but using those takes a few extra seconds, which I often just don't have if a perched bird suddenly takes flight. Thank you!

Hi Mark. Which Sony camera and lens combination would you recommend to buy for a beginner/intermediate ?

Mark Galer

In the Accessories and Gifts seminar I recommended the A6400 with 18-135 or the RX100Vll - these are the choices I discuss with my family and friends.

I will be in a National Park doing landscape and wildlife photography (two different bodies with different lenses). I'm used to being in AF-C mode and don't like to switch modes, if possible, because invariably I will forget to do so and miss a shot. Is there any disadvantage to always having my camera set to AF-C when doing landscape (still) photography?

Hi Mark. We are new Sony converts and have learned a great deal from your site, thanks so much for all you do. I very much took interest in your use of fast primes and not zooms, as that has not been what I have done in the past. I've read/seen/heard you several times talk about the 85 1.4 GM and the 85 1.8. I've decided the 85 1.8 is the correct choice for us. Certainly the money is a factor, but personally the larger factor is the weight. So much lighter and compact, and from what I have heard you say, it is plenty sharp with good bokeh. So I think we are comfortable with that choice. Please do chime in if I am missing anything in that evaluation. The other prime with a similar choice is the 35mm and I don't recall reading/seeing you speak to that. Maybe there is a video I missed. But this seems like a very similar choice, 1.4 GM @ $1500 and 18.5 oz. and a 1.8 @ about 1/2 that cost and 1/2 that weight. Again, to me the bigger factor is the size and weight. Money matters of course, but you spend it once and use it for years; so I want to make the right choice and only spend it once. How would you characterize these two lenses in quality, bokeh, sharpness, etc. If you have already addressed this, just point me to the right direction. Thanks Mark.

So I found your review of the 35 1.4 (which I should have done before posting!) and it seems to me that you see a bigger gap in quality between the 35 GM and the 35 1.8 than you do between the 85 GM and the 85 1.8. Would I be wrong? Thanks Mark.

Good Morning Mark, another curious question. First this statement: I have your camset file for A1 and it works so amazing for my work flow. The compensation dial at the top of exposure adjustments helps with adjusting the exposure because the zebras show until I lower it just right!!! Question: Would this be a reason to not have to use a darker filter on a lens? Or does the darker filters have a good use that the exposure dial cannot achieve?

Mark Galer

AF-C primarily uses Phase Detect AF. This is limited to the wider apertures on some Sony cameras. Apertures wider than f/8 on the A7RIII, f/11 on the A7III, f/16 on the A9 cameras and f/22 on the A1. Sony lists the aperture for each camera in the online version of the users manual. If you stop down further that the widest available for Phase Detect AF to work you may notice the camera hunting back and forth, unwilling or unable to find something to focus on. If you notice this happening you would be advised to switch to AF-S. In many instances when I have stopped down to f/11 or f/16 on an ultra wide-angle lens I usually find myself switching the MF and setting the hyperfocal distance for the focal length of the lens (I outlined this technique in the Landscape Masterclass seminar). You are probably aware that for 95% of my personal photography I have set the shoot mode dial to 1, 2 or 3. On the cameras that don't have focus mode and drive mode dials (all Alpha cameras except the A9, A9II and A1) the Memory is programmed to recall the Focus Mode. So when I turn the Shoot Mode dial from 2 for Action using AF-C to 3 for landscape it automatically switches the focus mode from AF-C to AF-S.

Neutral Density filters are only used when there is too much light and/or the photographer needs to extend the shutter speed, e.g. on the APS-C cameras and the A7C the maximum shutter speed is 1/4000 second. When using a lens with an f/1.4 or f/1.2 aperture in full sun you need a shutter speed of 1/8000 or 1/10000 second to prevent over exposure. An ND4 or ND8 will reduce exposure so a 1/4000 second shutter speed will lead to an image that is correctly exposed. ND filters are used when long exposures are required to smooth troubled waters. 6 to 10 stop filters are common so that shutter speeds in seconds rather than fractions of seconds can be used. The third reason an ND filter is sometimes used is when the ambient light is too bright for the maximum sync speed of the flash. Most photographers will use High Speed Sync but some flash units don't have this option.

Hi Mark: Tried to download your e-book "Colour Management for Photographers" from your web site and got a "404" error message. The link I tried was: http://adobe.ly/2drnUBE Is this e-book still available?

I used your 2017 Lightroom Tutorial for beginners to start using LR with my SonyA1, putting my first catalog file and images in Mac Pictures file as suggested. My laptop is now bulging so I have copied the folder (as suggested at around 24.15) onto a hard drive. Could you please point me to a work flow for removing the version in my Mac pictures file, getting LR to locate both the catalog and Image files, so I can work just as before, the only change being that LR is using a hard drive instead of my Pictures folder, which I want to use to start a new catalog for 2022. Many thanks for all your outtanding resources.
