Hi Mark, I have noticed that in your Custom Keys settings for the A7R4 (and most others, I think) you leave the Centre Button "Not Set". Is there a particular reason for this or is it that you simply don't need anymore custom keys? Thanks

Mark Galer

Just don’t need any more custom keys, although the Center button isn’t completely redundant as it is used in the Focus Magnify feature and to make menu selections etc.

Hi Mark, could you please tell me if you use a graphic drawing tablet instead of a mouse for your editing workflow? If so, what graphic drawing tablet would you recommend for use with Macs and Adobe Photoshop?

Mark Galer

Wacom has always been the most popular tablets to use but I don't use one. Artists who do a lot of pressure sensitive brush strokes can make good use of tablets in programs such as Photoshop. Programming the hot keys and re-learning shortcuts is a bit of a pain and finding enough space in front of your monitor can also present some users with unforeseen issues.

Hey Mark, after the release of the a6600 I set up my camera with the settings you describe in your ebook. Few days ago I got the A7R iv and I downloaded your ebook to check it out and to take a look at your settings. I expected that the settings would be really close to the a6600, but I noticed quite a big difference. So I would like to ask why you use quite different settings with these cameras (e.g. Auto ISO min. SS, Focus Area). Thanks in advance and greetings from Germany, Dennis

Mark Galer

I think I have ISO Auto Min SS set to 1/250 for portrait and 1/2000 for Action/Sport on both cameras. I used to recommend Fast for ISO Auto Min SS for Portraits but this did not effectively support users shooting portraits who chose to use wide-angle lenses and potentially shoot with slower shutter speeds than I would normally use. I now start with Zone rather than Expand Spot for Portraits but this should only ever be considered as a starting point and not the only Focus Area I recommend using. Expand Spot is used when picking out someone in a crowd who is not the closest person to the camera or the closest subject to the Center of the frame. In most instances Zone is likely to do the job faster and also ensures a greater likelihood of the Eye Af engaging straight away (if a spot is not close enough to the face the Eye AF does not engage). My Focus Area video tutorial explains why I change focus area and why I have the C2 Custom key assigned to this for fast access to this important menu setting. I will also be releasing a PAL workflow seminar for Patrons in the next 12 hours and this will explain the three memories in greater detail and how I use them ...and why I make certain changes to the registered or default settings.

Hi Mark, Hope you are keeping well. I am trying to clean the cmos of my camera (A1). Would you please recommend the brand of cleaner, especially the brand of the cleaning fluid? My appreciation. Best wishes, Jerry

Hi Mark, I intend to use my E70-350G with my A7R4A on an upcoming trip. I have noticed, if I shoot in full frame mode, without engaging APS-C mode, that at the short focal lengths there is no light fall off and it gets gradually greater as I zoom into 350mm, at which point it is quite obvious. Apart from being certain of framing and focus, is there any disadvantage in shooting in full frame mode and cropping in post where required?

Scott Robson

Hi Mark, do you own any Sony Flash units?

Scott Robson

Hi Mark, do you use extension tubes for macro images with your Sony lenses? If so, can you please recommend some tubes for use with Sony FE lenses?

Mark Galer

I do own and occasionally use a set of AF Macro extension tubes. You can download a Gifts and Accessories guide from the eBooks section which lists all of the accessories I use.

Mark Galer

You shouldn't notice the light fall-off on your Raw files if you are applying the lens Corrections profile in post production or the In-camera corrections if shooting JPEGs. The obvious distractions of shooting through a dark tunnel is the issue that most users will want to avoid when shooting with APS-C mode switched to Off. There should be no difference, however, in quality between cropping in camera (APS-C mode) or cropping in post.

Mark Galer

I used to use Aeroclipse Digital Sensor Cleaning Fluid and swabs but I now primarily use my Eyelead gel stick (the one listed in my accessories and Gifts guide that you can download from the eBooks section)

Hi Mark . I was taking pictures at a lumberjack/jill event with the A7IV, 24-105 & E70-350 (Thanks for the recomendation of this lens - it is great!). I was using your Action settings except I set the ISO Auto Min SS set @500. I was able to freeze the action as desired BUT it was a challenge to get the focus point on the person (with Face/Eye Prior in AF ON and Subject set to Human). When I would try to get EyeAF, the camera would focus on the moving bucksaw, axe, people in the background, etc. When I did get the AF point on the person, it often moved off and focused on stuff behind (less frequenlty in front) while I kept the shutter pressed down (Continous High). I was shooting wide open to keep the ISO as low as possible since it was cloudy so the DOF was not deep enough when it back focused for the primary subject to be in focus Wondering if I should have not Used Tracking = Zone and instead used Spot or Center to get a Lock? Are there other settings or technique you can share so I can nail the focus on the desired person and lock it on? Thanks, Bill

Mark Galer

90% of the time I am using a focus area larger than a spot. Spot requires accurate positioning and will wander with AF Tracking if it didn't find an edge with sufficient contrast or cause the camera to hunt for focus when using non-tracking AF options. With a spot the Eye AF will not engage unless the spot is close to the face. In some sports I have to turn off Eye AF if there is a crowd behind my target subject. Setting the tracking sensitivity to 1 (Locked on) will allow the camera to stick with the subject when the eye of your target subject is temporarily obscured, but sooner or later the focus will jump to someone else's eye as this is a priority. Sometimes the camera can track something else that is distinctive on the primary subject, e.g. a colourful shirt or hat etc. so Eye AF is not always needed.

Hi Mark I am enjoying your new video PAL Workflow Masterclass Seminar. Under the heading Action you mention changing the shutter speed from 1/2000 by pressing the C1 button. I appear to have changed the C1button to Focus Area and going through your various movies and the book on the a74 cannot find where to reset this. Thanks Joel

Mark Galer

Hi Joel - you have used last month's Q&A forum to ask this question so further comments should be channeled to the May Q&A forum. If you have loaded one of my CAMSETs you will find that I always program C1 to ISO Auto Min SS and leave the C2 key for Focus Area as this is the default mode for the C2 key on most full-frame Alpha cameras. The eBook will guide you as to how you can reprogram custom keys. You will find what you are looking for in the Setup > Operation Customize > Custom Key Settings menu.

This isnt about Sony, but do you have any leads for how I can suggest some changes to the programmers of Lightroom CC? thanks and hope u r enjoying the weekend!

Mark Galer

Did you get my answer for this question Les? I remember responding to this question but don't see it in this discussion thread.
