These images were captured during 2020, 2021 and 2022 - the COVID years. This presentation is dedicated to my father David Galer, who passed away in January 2022 at the age of 90, and who first introduced me to the craft of photography.

This five-minute 4K video has some of the memories from this time, including the periods of lockdown (the video starts with my hotel quarantine in Australia, after my wife and I returned from the UK, towards the end of 2020) but it also includes the life and limited travels I managed between lockdowns. The A7C, A1 and A7IV cameras were all reviewed during these years as well as many new Sony lenses.

I am well aware that we are not quite done with COVID. I caught COVID for the second time at the end of 2022 and this impacted my travel to India in January this year. I am, however, hoping that the world will slowly start to heal from this epidemic and trauma it caused for may people around the world. We all have our own stories of this period in history and I am sure the many individuals that I have photographed all have their own stories to tell.

Beautiful images and beautiful tribute to your father. My father was born in the same year as yours and also instilled in me a life long passion for photography. He is in an assisted living facility in the US now and I was not able to visit him from Australia for his 90th birthday due to Covid. I feel lucky that I have been able to see him since.

A delightful six minutes.

A delight. My father, born 1918, was indirectely an initiating force for my own photography. At that time he was the first engine master of a troller, and had the opportunity to invite me, then 12 years old, on a fishing trip, from Iceland, to Greenland and then taking the catch to market in Grimsby, UK. I borrowed my brothers camera, not having a clue, but wanting to document. My beginner's luck varied, but I still have some very nice shots from this memorable trip. Thanks for your constantly supporting and inspiring work.

I managed to get over to the UK in July 2020 by applying for special permission from the Government to leave the country, so that I could get my father into an aged-care facility. The Australian government, however, moved the goal posts for returning Australians while I was in the UK with my wife, and then we really struggled to get back home. Singapore Airlines was one of the only carriers flying to Australia and sometimes flying as few as two dozen Australians back in on one of their big jets with as little as two hours notice that you had a confirmed seat. There just wasn't enough quarantine places for Australians stranded overseas and we couldn't fly into Victoria as the borders were completely closed.

That sounds like an amazing start in photography Niels :-) I wanted my final project at University to be to document life aboard a fishing trawler but ended up documenting the last working coal mine in the Rhondda valley in South Wales instead.

My deepest sympathies for your father’s passing. Your photos, as always are first-rate and amazing. Sony is fortunate to have such a skilled photographer and reviewer as its Ambassador.

Robin

Beautifully done, Mark and a fitting tribute to your father. Thank you for sharing these memories.

Mark Galer

Thank you Robin. It's a good opportunity to collate these images into one single narrative rather than just let them reside in camera and lens reviews.

My condolences Mark. My father also passed away in 2022 (in July @ 89) and introduced me to photography back in the mid 70’s. I really appreciate your videos and the way you provide the information. You are a great teacher!

Justin Hurley

A great tribute to those years when your father and the world were equally struggling.

Darrilyn (Dandy) Lewis

Lovely video and wonderful tribute to your father. I lost my best friend, of many years, in 2022 and she was the same age as your dad.

Mark Galer

Sorry for your loss Dandy - these have been difficult times that I now hope are now behind us.

Felicia Alston

My sincere condolences for your sorrow and loss. It is such a beautiful thing to truly honor someone. This helps me move closer to healing, as my Mom transitioned from this life to the next in January 2023. Thank you for your service to us—it is honorable. ❤️

Mark Galer

Thanks for your condolences and I am sorry to her of your loss Felicia. My departed loved ones live on in my heart and in the eyes of my children. I also feel blessed that there was nothing left unsaid before my Father or Mother passed.

I just viewed your post and am very sorry for your loss and the unnecessary loss of many of all ages during the last 3 years. Please do help yourselves and take the time to review the medical information available. Be your own medical advocate and your families too if they wish.
