Back in 2017 Sony released its first A9 camera which used Sony's first full-frame stacked-sensor. This sensor took a huge step towards the 'Holy Grail' of sensor design, the Global Shutter Image-Sensor.
At the end of 2017 I created a blog post on my website titled 'Best Imaging Technology Development in 2017: Stacked BIS Sensor. I concluded the article by saying
"I suppose its just a matter of time before we see a ‘global shutter’ that can be synchronised to flash and then the mechanical shutter mechanism will disappear from the camera body altogether. How long are we away from seeing this?
Well it appears November 7th 2023 was that day.
The A9III camera, that will feature this revolutionary new sensor may not meet the needs of most photographers, but the technology will eventually be seen in more Alpha cameras. Perhaps a high-resolution A1 MKII
I will start to prepare a Patreon seminar that looks at the advantages and disadvantages of using a camera with this global shutter image sensor.
