A9III - 120fps while shooting 24 Megapixel Raw (Patreon)
Content
Some have questioned the need for 120fps, while others have been overly concerned about the 250 base level ISO of this camera.
This camera was, however, designed to meet the needs of some sports photographers who would like to capture images with the ball very close to the bat, club or racket every time. It is not intended to meet the needs of all photographers or match the resolution and dynamic range of an A7RV. This is a very different tool intended for very different photographers.
Is the high ISO performance and Dynamic Range good enough for sports photographers - YES
With this test of a gun firing bullets at a target, even 120 frames per second was not fast enough to ensure a bullet would appear close to the gun barrel every time a burst was captured. 240 or 480 frames per second might just secure that 100% success rate. For sports where the ball is moving 100 miles per hour (160kph) this should however be fast enough to allow a sports photographer to always be able to 'cherry-pick' the best shot from a sequence, protect it, and then delete the rest of the sequence in-camera.
Pre-Capture was turned on for this test and set to 0.5 seconds or shorter. Pre-capture allows images to be captured while half-pressing the shutter release or fully pressing the AF-On button. When you fully press the shutter release you can have up to 120 frames captured before the shutter release was fully depressed.
Lenses: 35mm F1.4 GM, 50mm F1.2 GM & 135mm F1.8 GM
Exposure Settings: 1/16000 second at F2.2, ISO 400 & 320
With a base level ISO of 250 you need an ND4 filter if you want to use F1.2 and 1.4 lenses in full sun at maximum aperture.
I personally think the A9III is the perfect camera for explosive action, but would encourage A1 owners to wait to see what 2024 brings if you don't cover sports with explosive action.
