While the newer version is decent this version will always be Superior IMO

Great reaction, JV, and thank you for sharing your thoughts about life and death. It's always scary to face that. I have CHF, so living with heart failure has also made me look at that possibility pretty much as a part of life. It's a good and bad thing -- I treasure every moment, but I also have to try to let go of the heavy stuff too and just live in those moments. This will always be my favorite adaptation of the book. I just didn't care for the latest adaptation, which I thought was overpraised -- the costumes and modern hair were terrible, the time jumps were badly managed, and since the costumes were so bad, everyone always looked the same so you couldn't tell when things were happening. It didn't help by having 12 year-old Amy cast by a grown actress (Florence Pugh, who I honestly thought was just not good, although she can be a terrific actress). The only thing I liked about the Gerwig version was the changed ending, which was so creative and wonderfully done -- focusing on Jo's writing and her book and not on her romance. Still, even though this one has the original ending, I think this one remains pretty much perfect. The casting is wonderful, as are the performances, and it's the only one (including the book) where I actually like Professor Bhaer. In the book, Bhaer is a moralizing tiresome old man who hypocritically lectures her about her stories -- even though they were making Jo money, she was having a great time writing them, and they were helping her family and even sending Beth to the seashore to recover, etc. In this, he is presented as simply encouraging her to be herself, and it doesn't hurt that he's played by the wonderful Gabriel Byrne, one of my favorite actors (you might recognize him from things like The Usual Suspects or End of Days, etc.). My one minor complaint is the casting and treatment of Mr. March -- he's a complete nonentity, he's cast by a man who looks like Marmee's father, and he has no presence at all. I think he maybe says 10 words in the entire movie. In the book, while he is still pretty useless (he basically sits back and "thinks great thoughts" while his wife and daughters wait on him), he at least does offer some gentle advice and wisdom on a few occasions. But in this Mr. March is a nonentity so it's even weirder to see all the women constantly in awe of this guy we don't ever get to know at all. It's a lovely movie and the score by Thomas Newman is also absolutely gorgeous.

You should watch the movies based on Jane Austen’s novels
