I didn't know you used to be in the navy. I respect you even more. It is a difficult job and hearing your story, makes me imagine even more how hard it is to live in the navy with all the training and other stuff. I remember a little over a year ago I went to visit a military base in Madeira (a Portuguese island in the Atlantic) for a day, along with a couple hundred teenagers my age as part of National Defense Day in Portugal. Basically, when you turn 18 (regardless of gender), you're required to attend National Defense Day, where you are given information on National Defense and role of the Armed Forces (if you live overseas, you can choose to attend, or be exempt). It's mostly to look at weapons, training grounds, presentations about the history of the military in the country, and civilian services like paramedics and police. Honestly, I don't see myself as a soldier, living like a soldier, and not being able to contact my family, but it is an interesting insight, even if it's just a visit for one day.

Damn. Sounds like you've gained some real perspective from that experience.. While I understand the reasoning behind operating that way, I imagine going through all that must take a toll on anyone who applies. I can only imagine the effects of solely being kept in those conditions would take.. It really sounds like you gained a real insight in regards to figuring out your own personal stance and values through your time there though. That it's better to be looked down upon by your peers but still be allowed to act on your free will, than be honored by the public and having been practically conditioned to behave in such a constant surgical manner. And you're entirely right, you don't have to save a bus from falling off a bridge in order to make a difference. If you simply fix the shoulder of a gown, you can help make someone's prom one of their best nights just by preventing an important seem from coming undone. Or if you make an internet video discussing your thoughts on a cart you've been into recently, you could help someone in hospital better take their mind off the pain. And for whatever it may be worth, I think I speak for everyone when I say that I'm pretty sure you've made a difference in a lot of people's lives without forcing yourself to stay in the navy 😁

Being a free will outcast over honoured conditioning... I've never been able to fully put it into words but you're right. That's exactly what I decided back then... Thanks Mercedes.
