There were ugly laws from the 1800s until 1974 so a lot of time disabled people were not allowed to be in public unless they were part of this kind of thing. Most had to stay home or were institutionalized. It was a HUGE part of the ADA (American disabilities act) and one of the things that disability advocates are very worried about coming back into play with project 2025 stripping away those rights!

Megan Tolentino

I am far behind on this, but the movie Roshawn is talking about is called Freaks. It stars actual performers from freak shows. I really enjoyed it, especially the end. The Freak Show season of American Horror Story obviously draws heavily on it. It stars one woman with a disability that shows up in Freaks, what they called than a “pinhead”, but is actually microcephaly. Going very far away from the episode, but related to freak shows, it has a plot line criticizing a museum that displays remains from people with physical deformities that I’m pretty sure is referencing the Mutter Museum in Philly. I’ve been, it’s really fascinating. But it made me reflect on how gross it is to view that stuff without the consent of the person, so now I feel bad about it 😅 (I’ve restrained myself from yelling about horror movie references in previous episodes because this is so much later, but I think I’m close enough to release for this one. Though I did laugh when you mixed up Tolentino with Tarantino, I think that’s pretty common)
