Thank you very much to Jeff for commissioning this episode!

These chapters are the ones where Miller is let go when he's least expecting it, and while I definitely understand how adrift he must feel, I have to admit I think it's for the best. Meanwhile, Jim & Co. get to their destination and meet Fred, and things seem to be going smoothly finally. I don't trust it.

Thank you all so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!

Sam Sprague

I found Miller a lot more interesting and less annoying than Holden, but he’s still a broken asshole with a worldview I agree with less than Holden. It’s weird because he’s an unreliable narrator but still pretty self-aware in a lot of ways. I think his weirdness with Julie is more a product of his brokenness than any foundational narcissism or disrespect of women. He’s lonely on a bunch of levels and in a crisis of identity. It’s like you said, Julie can be a lot of things for him in his imagination in that context. I think if Miller was getting laid regularly but most else equal, he would still be weirdly obsessive about Julie but without as much of the romantic element, and it would feel more fatherly. Nevertheless, he is messed up, and none of the stuff he’s doing at this point is likely to heal him.
