These chapters are the ones where Carl and Donut get to see Bea again and it's a very strange and in some ways unsatisfying scene because there has to be so much posturing and pretending because of the lack of privacy. I'm really curious if we're going to see her again.

Dev Testing

People on Reddit had asked Dinniman about Donut’s smuggling of the Valtay agents and he said that it’s all there in the book. After he said that, people figured it out. Basically, when they are on the way to Odette’s show, the security guys check Carl and Donut and one of them scratches her under the chin. Carl thought it was weird that she would let a dog guy scratch her like that. But what happened is that he put the Vaklay worms into her mouth. Donut doesn’t speak after that point and Carl thinks it’s because she is nervous, but it’s really because she has the worms in her mouth. Then Donut greets Zev with a head bump. What she is really doing passing the worms to Zev at this point. Then. Zev leaves because she says she is being “called back to the office”. So that’s how it happened.

Remember, Carl's mom died in a failed murder/suicide. She wanted to kill her abusive husband and herself so that Carl could "have a better life."
