W episode!! Also about Zuko and Uncle cutting off their hair, the Fire Nation is heavily inspired by Japan, and in the feudal era, those of high status had a 'top-knot' hairstyle called a chonmage, like those worn by Uncle and Zuko. Because top-knots showed that one was of a higher class, to lose it would show a loss of status, and so, for instance, if a samurai lost his top-knot, he would be shamed and lose his honour

Fun fact: By Japanese law the chonmage hairstyle is no longer allowed for samurai to have (there's a 100+ year old imperial law). Nowadays only sumo wrestlers can have it in an official manner and when they retire they cut it off signaling the end of their sumo career.

Cutting off the top knot is, I believe, an old Samauri bushido thing. Top knots represent status, so cutting it off usually symbolizes renouncement of said status. Here, Zuko and Iroh are renouncing their ties to the fire nation, which is the Japan equivalent in this setting.

Book 2 is probably my favorite book! I mean Book 3 is, obviously, insanely good, but I love the character building that happens in Book 2 a LOT.
