Chapter 4 of Radiant saw the introduction of a new gameplay element which, for lack of a better term, I've been referring to as "The Hangout."

Aka, the moment where players are prompted to "spend some time with the girls and continue when finished." When working on this... the idea I had in mind was giving players the opportunity to feel, if even just for a few good minutes, that they're genuinely there in the world: relaxing and spending time with the triplets by the lake.

I wanted this to be as immersive as possible and really convey what a day in the sun with our three freckled cuties would feel like... hence the inclusion of one-time events, a montage for each activity, and more than a couple dozen renders for each.

I think it goes without saying but I worked very hard on this scene... and I'm very curious to know what players thought of it, for better or worse. So then...

What is your opinion of "The Hangout," and would you like to see more of this type of "gameplay" in the future?

Tldr; good scene. Also, choices make games feel real, but so do limitations. I think there needs to be a careful balance between player choice and environmental limitations in order to create a sense of immersion. I definitely like to feel as if my choices matter in a game, but my actions won't feel like they matter unless they are clearly limited and can only result in a limited number of outcomes. I mean, full-blown autonomy doesn't even exist IRL. Freedom of choice is a lie that is spread by assholes who are trying to distract us from the fact that they have put us in shackles. Like, I can't just walk outside and start re-enacting what can be done while playing something like GTA. Having that much control over the behavior of the character is actually what makes those kinds of games feel so unrealistic. So choices are good. Also, setting some limitations or boundaries can actually add to the realism/immersion that a player experiences. Feeling completely in control might actually be a detriment to player immersion.

I enjoyed the scene, or rather the whole sequence of a few scenes, but not the idea of "The Hangout" itself. The slideshow alone with matching relaxing music would be good enough for me. When it comes to immersion in your game, IMHO those carefully chosen music tracks do the trick, for me at least. That's probably because I don't like free roams or sand-box elements in AVN in general. I just prefer to follow the story as its creator has intended. So no, I don't expect more of this gameplay in the future. Especially if that means longer development time.

It was definitely an enjoyable scene. The one thing I would have liked would have been two or three different replay value activities within it. For example, clicking Go Swimming would pull up what we did, then you click it again and maybe you and one of the triplets would have a splashing contest, or maybe step on a rock and hurt themselves so the other one can help out, that kind of thing.

Fortunately, outside of this first one (since some unfamiliar coding work needed to be done), it shouldn't require *too much* additional effort to bring it back in the future. I think the hardest part of the scene was just the creative effort needed to prolong the events that occur in a way that doesn't feel slow or unenjoyable... so the difficulty came more from the storytelling and teaching myself some new coding tricks. It should come easier/more natural in the future now that I've done it once. Keep in mind also: this won't be the type of thing that you see every, or even every other chapter... but rather a rare occurrence for certain special or important moments like this one.

I think the only issue was that, at first, I thought it might be a branching choice that if I spent time with one I might miss out on a scene with the others or that which ever I chose last might have a negative reaction to being chosen last. Obviously it was all relaxing and chill, but most choices have some impact so i didn't see the less consequential "hangout" choices coming.

The "hangout" was good because it was focused on the triplets. I don't think it would work in another scenario but I liked that the majority of the episode was focused on the relationships with the three of them. Out of all of the "visual novels" I have played this one has the best "graphics/art". Keep that up.
