AN: Okay, I won't lie, I got a bit carried away and ended up extending the fight a bit too much.😅

[6 PM] [Dunphy House]

The front door opened, and Haley stepped inside with her phone in her hand. She closed the door behind her, then stopped when she saw Claire standing near the kitchen with that exact mom expression that meant casual conversation had already been cancelled.

Alex sat at the dining table with an open textbook, several notes, and a pencil in her hand. She looked like she was studying, though her eyes moved toward Haley almost immediately. Upstairs, Phil’s voice carried faintly from Luke’s room.

“Now remember, Luke, the audience must never see the coin until the magic has already happened.”

Luke answered loudly, “What if I lose the coin before the magic happens?”

Phil paused before replying, “Then we move forward with the second emergency coin.”

Haley tried to walk toward the stairs like she had entered the wrong house by mistake, but Claire shifted one step forward with a polite smile that held way too much pressure.

“Hi, honey,” Claire said, folding her arms while keeping her voice sweet enough to sound dangerous. “How was your drive?”

Haley stopped, looked at her mother, then glanced toward Alex, who suddenly became very interested in a paragraph about environmental policy. “It was good,” Haley said as she adjusted her purse strap. “We drove around, went to Santa Monica, ate lunch, and came back.”

Claire nodded slowly. “That sounds nice.”

“It was nice.”

Claire’s smile tightened. “How nice?”

Haley blinked at her. “Regular nice.”

Alex snorted quietly into her textbook.

Haley turned her head. “Do you have something to add, Hermione?”

Alex kept her eyes on the page. “I’m just impressed by how much information you managed to remove from an entire afternoon.”

Claire pointed toward the dining table. “Alex, don’t start.”

“I didn’t start anything,” Alex said, finally looking up. “I’m simply observing that Haley came home from a long drive with Jason and gave us the emotional summary of a weather report.”

Haley stepped farther into the room and dropped her purse onto the couch. “I didn’t know I had to give a full presentation.”

Claire walked around the counter and studied her daughter’s face more closely. “I’m your mother. When my daughter spends half the day with a boy she clearly likes, and whom your sister likes too, I’m allowed to ask questions."

Haley gave her a flat look. “You’re allowed to ask questions. I’m allowed to regret opening the door.”

Claire ignored that and lowered her voice slightly. “Haley, I’m serious. After what happened with Alex and Jason the other day, I was worried you might feel like you had to prove something.”

Alex’s pencil stopped moving.

Haley looked at Claire, then at Alex, and the easy smile on her face faded a little. “I didn’t do anything because of Alex.”

Alex leaned back in her chair. “That sounded almost believable.”

Haley pointed at her. “You kissed him on the sidewalk in front of the whole house.”

Alex lifted her chin. “I kissed him because I wanted to.”

“And I went out with him because I wanted to,” Haley shot back, crossing her arms. “See how that works both ways?”

Claire raised both hands slightly. “That’s exactly what I’m worried about. This is already turning into a competition, and both of you are pretending it’s completely normal.”

Haley rolled her eyes. “Mom, it was one drive.”

Alex gave her a sharp look. “You were gone for over five hours.”

“There was traffic.”

“You went to Santa Monica.”

“That has traffic.”

“You also changed your outfit three times before leaving.”

Haley’s mouth opened, then closed when she realized Alex had walked into the room earlier and had absolutely seen that. “That doesn’t mean anything.”

Claire looked between them and pressed her fingers to her forehead. “This is what I mean. You two are already keeping score.”

Upstairs, Phil’s voice carried again. “Luke, please don’t put the card in your mouth. Magic is about misdirection, not digestion.”

Luke replied, “Then why does the rabbit get to hide in a hat?”

Claire closed her eyes for one second, then opened them like she had decided to deal with one disaster at a time.

Haley stepped closer to the dining table and looked at Alex directly. “We talked about you, by the way.”

Alex’s expression changed immediately. “You talked about me?” She smiled with a little shy expression that Claire caught.

Claire’s eyes widened. “Why were you talking about Alex?”

Haley shrugged, though she clearly enjoyed having the upper hand for once. “Because someone had to ask about the kiss and what he thinks about you and if he wants to go on another date with you and where we stand at this point. You know? The regular stuff.”

Alex set her pencil down carefully. “And what did he say?”

"Wouldn't you like to know," Haley said with a teasing smile.

Alex stared at her for a second, then pushed her textbook aside. “You’re doing that thing again.”

Haley tilted her head. “What thing?”

“That thing where you act like you have valuable information just because you enjoy watching people react,” Alex said, folding her hands on the table like she was about to deliver a closing argument. “It's an egregiously overt display of emotional exploitation.”

Haley blinked twice.

Then she looked at Claire.

Then back at Alex.

“Okay, first of all, I don’t know what half of that meant, but it sounded rude.”

“It was supposed to sound rude,” Alex said calmly.

Claire pressed her lips together and shook her head, already looking like she regretted every choice that had led to this exact kitchen.

Haley stepped closer to the table. “You know what? Fine. He said he likes you.”

Alex’s face changed before she could stop it.

It was small, but Haley saw it.

Claire saw it too.

Alex cleared her throat and reached for her pencil like that would somehow make her less obvious. “He said that?”

Haley crossed her arms. “Yes, he said that. He said you’re smart, easy to talk to, and that lunch was fun.”

Alex looked down at her notes. “That’s a reasonable assessment. I mean, he's smart, understands my jokes, knows about global warming, and that lunch was really fun."

Haley’s eyes narrowed. “Oh my God, you’re glowing.”

“I am not glowing.”

“You’re mentally skipping through a library right now.”

“I don’t skip.”

“Exactly. That’s how I know it’s serious.”

Claire raised a hand. “Girls, maybe we should all take a breath before this becomes something we can’t walk back from.”

Haley glanced at her mother. “Mom, she’s acting like she won because Jason said nice things about her.”

Alex looked up immediately. “I’m not acting like I won. You’re the one treating this like a pageant with better lighting.”

Haley’s mouth opened, then she paused.

She frowned.

“Wait. Are you saying I need better lighting?”

Claire closed her eyes again. "Oh, god," She mumbled.

Alex stared at her. “That’s what you took from that sentence?”

Haley pointed at her. “You said pageant. That’s my area.”

“That was a metaphor.”

“Then use one that doesn’t involve my strengths.”

Alex leaned back in her chair. “Fine. You’re treating this like some kind of romantic territorial dispute.”

Haley blinked again.

There was a short silence.

Then Haley looked toward Claire. “Is she calling me a dog?”

Claire pressed her fingers against the bridge of her nose. “No, honey. She’s saying you’re being possessive.”

Haley turned back to Alex. “Then say possessive. Why do you always add extra words like the sentence needs a college degree?”

Alex smiled sweetly. “Because some of us enjoy vocabulary.”

Haley threw her hands up in the air as a gesture and yelled, “And some of us enjoy people.”

Claire’s head snapped up. “Haley.”

Alex sat straighter. “Wow. There it is.”

“What?” Haley asked, throwing both hands up. “You started it.”

“I used words,” Alex said. “You used emotional vandalism.”

Haley stopped again.

She blinked slowly.

“Okay, that one actually sounded kind of cool, but I’m still mad.”

..

<Haley & Alex: commentary>

Haley sat on the couch with one leg crossed over the other, looking offended and proud at the same time.

“Alex does this thing where she uses huge words when she’s losing,” Haley said. “It’s like verbal pepper spray. You don’t know what happened, but suddenly your eyes hurt and you’re angry.”

She thought for a second.

“Also, emotional vandalism sounds like something I would be really good at.”

..

Alex sat upright, hands folded neatly in her lap.

“Haley thinks every argument is about confidence,” Alex said. “That’s because confidence is usually her entire plan.”

She paused.

“To be fair, it works disturbingly often.”

Alex looked away for a second, then added quietly, “Jason noticing that she’s fun doesn’t mean I’m worried.”

Another pause followed.

“I mean, I’m not thrilled.”

..

Back in the kitchen, Claire moved between the table and the stairs, placing herself in the exact middle like she was blocking two shopping carts from crashing in a grocery aisle.

“Okay, listen to me,” Claire said, looking at both daughters. “You both like the same boy. That’s already complicated. We don’t need insults, secret scoring, or whatever this is becoming.”

Haley lifted one hand. “I’m not scoring.”

Alex gave her a look. “You literally asked him if he liked me.”

“That was research.”

“That was surveillance.”

“That was a conversation.”

“That was romantic espionage.”

Claire shook her head and looked toward the ceiling like she was asking the house for patience.

Alex stood from the table. “You want to know what bothers me? You act like I stole something from you.”

Haley’s expression shifted. “You kissed him first.”

“So?” Alex asked, though her voice sharpened. “You went out with him today. You had your chance to talk to him, didn’t you?”

“That’s not the point.”

“That is exactly the point,” Alex said, stepping away from the chair. “You’re mad because for once, somebody didn’t automatically pick you first.”

Haley’s face changed.

Claire immediately straightened. “Alex.”

Haley stared at her sister for a second, hurt flashing across her face before anger covered it. “Wow. That’s what you think?”

Alex’s expression tightened, but she didn’t take it back. “I think you’re used to being the obvious choice. And the second you’re not, you start acting like the universe made a clerical error.”

Haley took a breath and continued, her voice lower now. “For your information, I’m not mad because he likes you. I’m mad because you came home acting like you beat me.”

Alex frowned. “I did not.”

“You did,” Haley said. “You had that smug little face.”

“I don’t have a smug little face.”

“You have three smug little faces.”

Alex looked offended. “I absolutely do not.”

“You have the one when you get an A, the one when Mom says you were right, and the one you had after kissing Jason.”

Claire pointed between them. “This is exactly what I mean by keeping score.”

Haley looked at her mother. “Mom, she has categories.”

Alex folded her arms. “You’re impossible.”

“And you’re acting like you’re better than me because Jason talked to you about books.”

“I never said that.”

“You didn’t have to,” Haley said, her voice rising. “You always do this. You act like because I care about clothes and dating and normal people stuff, I’m automatically shallow.”

Alex’s face softened for half a second, but her pride stepped in before her apology could reach the door. “You do make it very easy sometimes.”

Haley’s eyes widened. “Excuse me?”

Claire inhaled sharply through her nose. “Alex, that was not helpful.”

Haley pointed at Alex, then at herself. “At least I don’t turn every conversation into a test nobody signed up for.”

Alex fired back immediately. “At least I don’t flirt like it’s a recreational sport.”

From upstairs, Phil suddenly called, “Claire, do we own a smoke machine?”

Claire yelled back without turning around, “No.”

Phil paused. “What if I already found one?”

Claire looked toward the stairs. “Then we’re having two emergencies today.”

Luke yelled, “The smoke machine is haunted.”

Haley and Alex both turned toward the stairs for a second.

Then they looked back at each other, and the fight somehow resumed exactly where it had paused.

Alex pointed at Haley. “You’re deflecting.”

Haley pointed right back. “And you’re annoying.”

“That’s not an argument.”

“It is when it’s true.”

Claire stepped between them more firmly this time. “Enough. Both of you sit down.”

Haley crossed her arms. “I’m not sitting.”

Alex, who was at that point standing, said, “Neither am I.”

Claire stared at them. “Wonderful. We’re doing synchronized stubbornness now."

..

<Claire & Phill Commentary>

Claire sat beside Phil on the couch, looking like she had aged three years during one conversation.

“When the girls were little, they fought over dolls, clothes, bathroom time, and once, a cupcake that neither of them actually wanted,” Claire said. “I thought that was bad.”

Phil nodded beside her. “Now they’re fighting over a boy with a sports car and a murder house.”

Claire looked at him.

Phil quickly added, “Which sounds worse when I say it with my mouth.”

Claire rubbed her forehead. “I’m trying to stay calm because Alex likes him, which means he can’t be completely brainless.”

Phil smiled. “And Haley likes him, which means he has excellent hair.”

Claire slowly turned toward him again.

Phil swallowed. “I am here to support the family.”

<Claire & Phill Commentary End>

..

Claire lowered her voice and looked at both girls with the kind of seriousness that made them actually pause. “Listen. I don’t care how charming Jason is. I don’t care how good his car looks or who kissed who first. You two are sisters before anything else, and I’m not watching you tear each other apart over one boy.”

Haley glanced away first.

Alex looked down at the table.

For a moment, the kitchen finally quieted.

Then Haley muttered, “He does have a really good car.”

Alex nodded without thinking. “It’s a very good bike.”

Claire stared at both of them. “That was not the takeaway.”

Haley looked at Alex, and for a brief second, the anger between them shifted into something more familiar. Annoyance, rivalry, and sisterhood all tangled together in the same messy knot.

And so, the fight finally paused for the moment.

😅 That's Haley alright. Nice one.

RizenKing

This captured their essence perfectly, but it’s also gonna be hilarious. When Haley finally does bring up the whole both dating him thing and Claire is probably going to have opinions about this that no one’s asked for.
