Typically I’d say locals avoid the gas lamp area. I would say a must is finding a local taco shop to get a California burrito or carne asada fries, it’s a San Diego staple. The balboa is a great dive bar with one of the best burgers in the city. Also across the street from Gilly’s is Luigi’s pizzeria. You can get pizza by the slice and a drink. There are a few locations around the city, it’s one of my favorites
